Hotel Description
This mid-18th century former inn offers unique rooms free Wi-Fi and excellent views of Rye. Built around 1750 for local sailors and ship builders The Hope Anchor is thought to have once sheltered the Tenterden Gang who used its old secret passages for smuggling. Relax beside the log fire in traditional cozy bar and enjoy the individually styled bedrooms some of which have a four poster bed. In the morning enjoy a delicious traditional full English breakfast or if you prefer a lighter continental breakfast of cold meats and cheeses yogurt and fresh fruit salad or maybe even have both!! all served in our breakfast room. (Please note we do not serve lunches or evening meals) Couples particularly like the location — they rated it 9.4 for a two-person trip. We speak your language! It was a good stay,...

Liked: The breakfast was great. No complaints whatsoever. The room we had was a twin room under the eaves, and being an old building it was a bit squashed; opening the door to the bathroom banged the door to the room, but that's to be expected in an old building. It was very clean and the shower was good. The bed was comfy. The staff were all very friendly.
Disliked: Unfortunately their boiler broke the day of our arrival and still wasn't fixed 2 days later when we left so we had a portable electric heater in the bedroom for 2 days to make up for the lack of heating. Being up in the eaves meant that when it was windy the wind howled very loudly around our windows, and my brother got very little sleep the first night as a result of the wind howling all night. Again, I do realise that this isn't the fault of the staff, but it might be of interest to other people who are light sleepers looking to book a twin room.

Liked: Location. Excellent breakfast. Good tea making facilities in the room.
Disliked: Poor shower in tiny bathroom with squeaky floor. Very meagre and poor quality shampoo and shower gel. Dirty windows. Difficult access as up two flights of stairs and then limited head room to access room.

Good

Liked: The view from the room. Very friendly helpful staff. A very pleasant atmosphere. The breakfast was quite acceptable and the bed reasonably comfortable. Great fish restaurants around town, but be sure to book in advance since the best ones get booked up well in advance. The hoteliers are all willing to advise you where to go.
Disliked: In common with most hotel accommodation in Rye, The Hope Anchor is old and as the Americans would say, 'Very Quaint'. Hence guests should not expect level floors, tightly fittings doors and windows, wonderful balustrades adorning modern staircases and the like. What really counts in Rye is 'atmosphere'. That is why people visit this ancient town. Parking a car in Rye is always a challenge. One needs to be adaptable and not complain if one finds oneself climbing up and down rock hewn steps. On past occasions I came with my own yacht which is a sheer delight if you don't mind sitting alongside a high quay wall high and dry on the mud for much of the day!
