With its classic décor, antique furnishings, and artistic vibe, this historic hideaway offers a cozy and inspiring base for music lovers exploring the city. Just a short stroll from Columbia University and easily connected to midtown Manhattan, it’s the perfect mix of culture, charm, and convenience.

Why Concert-goers love it

This spot is a dream for fans heading to uptown and midtown venues. You're within easy reach of places like the Apollo Theater, Central Park concert events, and even venues near Times Square thanks to nearby subway lines. Despite its central location, the hotel is known for being quiet and peaceful—ideal after a loud night out. With a super early 9:00 AM check-in, you can even drop your bags and hit the city before the show.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends who want a unique and budget-friendly stay with character
  • Solo travelers looking for a creative, soulful base in NYC
  • Couples who love vintage charm and a slower pace after a lively night
  • Fans needing a quiet space to unwind after standing front row
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who want style without the high price tag

Food and Drink Options

While The Harlem Flophouse doesn’t have on-site dining, its location puts you within walking distance of some of Harlem’s best late-night bites and iconic soul food spots. Think cozy cafés for a slow morning recovery and plenty of casual eats perfect for a post-show meal. Grab a classic New York bagel or an all-day breakfast just around the corner.

Nightlife Options

Harlem is known for its legendary jazz bars and intimate lounges. You're minutes from some of the most historic music spots in the city. Prefer to stay in? The shared lounge at the Flophouse is a relaxing space to wind down with fellow travelers and share concert stories.

What People Say

Guests rave about the authentic vintage style, calling it “a true step back in time.” The atmosphere is described as artsy, inspiring, and peaceful, with many reviewers highlighting the friendly vibe and unique experience. It’s a far cry from cookie-cutter hotels—which is exactly what makes it memorable.

Areas for Improvement

The shared bathrooms may not be for everyone, and there’s no elevator—so pack light if you're on a higher floor. Also, there’s no air conditioning, which can be a factor in summer months. But if you’re after character and charm over convenience, this place delivers.

The Bottom Line

If you’re a music fan who loves history, creativity, and a peaceful night’s sleep after the show, The Harlem Flophouse hits all the right notes.

A unique and enjoyable stay,...

Liked: Wonderful character, and chance to experience old world Harlem. Live Jazz is very special.
Disliked: Perhaps the bed and bedding, although in keeping with old styles, could have been modernised for comfort.

Very authentic stay in Harlem...

Liked: I didn’t really like the bedsheets, they were a bit smelly but for the price I won’t complain

Charming and convenient

Liked: Beautiful and charming hotel in Harlem, very conveniently located near the La Guardia airport bus and two subway stations. The neighborhood is safe and has multiple convenience stores, theatres and restaurants. The room is large and has storage space, and a small basin.
Disliked: The room was a bit too cold to be fully comfortable and one would expect that the shared bathroom is cleaned everyday (although we were lucky we were alone for the first two days). The owner came to say hi on the second or third day (would have been nicer to see a face earlier).

The price it financially possible...

Liked: Two blocks away from the subway, a 15 min ride from central manhatten or a 15 min walk from central park. Nice big room with a sink. Quiet and peaceful. Little closetspace but very specious room. Very good for the price, would recommend.

Superb

Liked: The Harlem Flophouse is beautiful. Truly a worthwhile stay. I loved the living room area, with all its books and art. When I first entered the room there was jazz playing on the radio in the room. It all felt like being transported back in time.
Disliked: Unfortunately the room I stayed in was dusty, had some cob webs, and seemed as though it hadn't been thoroughly cleaned.

Pleasant

Liked: Charming, vintage and cozy atmosphere.
Disliked: Smelly dirty old pillows, mattress covers and carpet in the room. Staff couldn’t / wouldn’t resolve the issue. Musty towels, even after changing them on request. Old stained toilet seats. Work in progress in the ceiling of one room and toilet for the air conditioning conducts. Vintage is nice, old and dirty not.
