The Great Western Hotel

Low points were the very tired decor. I do appreciate that it is an old hotel but curtains hanging off the windows in a superior room and general presentation of the corridors and lift. We spent 3 days there and felt things could have been better.

Liked: Friendly staff; room.
Disliked: The price we paid was not worth it.

Very disappointed with room, needs...

Liked: The staff were nice and breakfast was good as was the location
Disliked: Severely out of date property, paint and paper hanging off walls, bathroom straight from the 1970’s complete with shower curtain and broken tiles. Room was a complete let down and broken lift!

Staff friendly, location good but...

Liked: The location and view from the room.
Disliked: Needs a lot of modernising, faded grandeur needs complete decoration throughout. Old fashioned rooms. Lift not working. Breakfast adequate but not that marvellous. Dinner very nice but stops serving at 8pm. No information about the hotel in the room.

Disliked: The lift was out of order for the whole of our stay. Some folk really struggled up the stairs. We got no warning of this.The staff were either new or not well trained and the chap who was most behind the counter and seemed in charge wore his cap the entire time and never took his coat off. Doesn't seem like much but sets a standard for the rest of the place.Bar prices for drinks seemed erratic, one round was more than another etc.Even though were were staying 3 nights no-one came and freshened the tea, coffee etc or serviced the room at all. We had to ask each day for these things.Our room was recently painted and fairly clean but some we spoke to had a room with wallpaper hanging off the wall and showers that didn't work.I think for the money they charge this hotel is no where near up to standard. Its part of a worldwide chain of Muthu hotels but we'll remember not to stay in one again.

Pleasant stay in a comfortable...

Liked: The location is excellent, with lovely views of the harbour. The room has all facilities needed and a very comfortable bed. There was a decent selection for breakfast.
Disliked: The fire alarm went off three times during the night, which wasn't ideal for getting a good night's sleep. The control on the bath to change from bath to shower was broken and therefore hard to use.

Awful night due to fire...

Liked: Exceptionally clean and the receptionist was welcoming
Disliked: Our room smelled of cigarette smoke. The fire alarm went off 3 times during the night.
