The Spotlight on The Gibside Hotel

Charming Village Comfort Just Minutes from Newcastle

Modern convenience meets small-town charm at The Gibside Hotel, nestled in the historic village center of Whickham. With cozy, en suite rooms and sweeping views from its bistro-style bar, this friendly hotel offers a peaceful base just 8 minutes from central Newcastle and a quick hop from the A1M motorway. Whether you're heading to a sold-out arena show or exploring the city's buzzing nightlife, it’s a great blend of location and comfort.

Why Concert-goers love it

Concert fans appreciate the hotel’s quick access to Newcastle's top music venues—just a short drive or taxi ride away. Being tucked away in Whickham means it’s quiet at night, perfect for unwinding after a loud gig. Check-in starts at 14:00, and with checkout at 11:00, there’s plenty of time for a lie-in after a late show. Easy access to the A1M and MetroCentre transport links makes getting around seamless.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a relaxed, affordable base
  • Solo travelers catching a bucket-list gig in Newcastle
  • Couples making a weekend of it with concerts and shopping
  • Fans wanting a quieter post-concert recovery space
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who don’t want to sacrifice comfort

Food and Drink Options

Grab a bite at Paco’s à la carte restaurant for a pre-show dinner, or chill out in the Sphinx Lounge Bar with its panoramic village views and casual menu. While there’s no 24-hour room service, the on-site options cover late-ish cravings, and there are local pubs and eateries within walking distance. Breakfast is available, perfect for a slow start after a big night.

Nightlife Options

While Whickham itself is more village than Vegas, you're only minutes from Newcastle’s thriving nightlife scene—including The Quayside, known for its pubs, clubs, and riverside vibes. Back at the hotel, the Sphinx Lounge is a great spot to wind down with a drink.

What People Say

Guests love the friendly staff, spotlessly clean rooms, and peaceful setting. Many highlight the easy access to Newcastle and the comfort of the beds. The on-site restaurant gets strong reviews for both food and atmosphere.

Areas for Improvement

It’s not in the center of the action—so you’ll need to factor in taxis or public transport to reach venues. And while the hotel doesn’t have its own live music, the calm setting is a plus for those looking to relax post-show.

The Bottom Line

If you want a quiet, comfortable base with easy access to Newcastle’s concerts and nightlife, The Gibside Hotel delivers great value just outside the city buzz.

Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Change the fat at breakfast.

Liked: Great location. Bar staff gave great customer service in the evening. Perhaps the bfast team could take on some tips. Room dated but roomy. Lovely setting on the high street but great views at the back.
Disliked: Hotel is a little dated. Pillow linen yellow. Beds, two singles pushed together you could feel the base and springs on one side, so slept in other which was OK. Very warm room but opened window.. bathroom has been updated but toilet doesn't flush well or the water is yellow round here. Directions for parking could be better if you're not local. Breakfast room is very pretty. Sadly everything else was a shocker. I stood around for a few minutes while the waitress stood in the kitchen talking about the night before. I said good morning twice, hoping that she would hear. Once seated and before I had had a chance to look at the menu she asked me what I wanted. I went for a full English. It arrived within a couple of minutes. It all had an odd smell and taste and swimming in fat. I had to leave it. The teapots spout was badly chipped and dirty. I didn't try what was inside. When I was checking out. The lady on reception said I had to settle up for the bfast I had had. I explained it was included in my bookings.com reservation. She was adamant it wasn't, even after showing her the invoice. I also explained how I had to leave it as it was inedible. She then agreed that it had been paid for.

Hot room, staff could be...

Liked: Breakfast was really good food wise and the staff in the bar area were really friendly and helpful
Disliked: The room could’ve had some air con it was very hot, the breakfast staff could’ve been increased as there just seemed to be a single member serving and taking everyone’s orders.. this probably resulted in a breakfast item being left off my plate which is understandable as she was so busy. There was little to no conversation as the same member of staff was rushed off her feet. Same goes for the reception staff. I felt a bit aggrieved at attitudes on 3 separate occasions being dealt with by the same person. And on checkout there was no friendly how was your stay or I hope you enjoyed your stay. I asked also for a little something to be arranged for the room on arrival in an email which I didn’t get a response to.
