The Spotlight on The George

Charming Countryside Stay Just Outside the Sheffield Scene

Modern comfort meets historic charm at The George, a beautifully updated 500-year-old inn nestled in the scenic village of Hathersage. Just 10 miles from Sheffield, this cozy retreat in the heart of the Peak District offers the best of both worlds—access to the city's concert venues with a peaceful place to recharge after the show.
Expect contemporary décor, free WiFi, and a warm welcome in a setting that blends rustic character with modern convenience.

Why Concert-goers love it

The George is a favorite for fans who want to escape the post-show buzz and enjoy a quieter night’s sleep. While it’s not in the middle of the city, it's within easy reach—just a short drive or train ride to Sheffield’s top music venues. The 15:00 check-in and 11:00 check-out give some flexibility, especially for those late-night returns. Plus, the peaceful village atmosphere makes it ideal for winding down after a high-energy concert.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends who want to explore the Peak District in between shows
  • Solo travelers ticking off a dream gig with a side of countryside charm
  • Couples planning a romantic weekend around a concert night
  • Fans needing post-concert quiet to relax and recharge
  • Budget-conscious music fans looking for value outside the city

Food and Drink Options

The George serves up a hearty full English breakfast each morning—perfect after a late night out. There's an on-site restaurant offering dinner, but late-night dining is limited, so plan ahead if you're coming back late from a show. While there's no 24/7 room service, the hotel’s restaurant is well-reviewed for quality and atmosphere.

Nightlife Options

While The George doesn’t host live music on-site, it’s a short journey to Sheffield’s buzzing nightlife. For a quieter evening, the hotel bar offers a relaxed atmosphere and a good selection of drinks—ideal for a nightcap before bed. Nearby pubs in Hathersage also provide a warm, local vibe.

What People Say

Guests love the blend of modern comfort and historic charm. Reviewers often praise the friendly staff, immaculate rooms, and delicious breakfast. Many mention that the location is great for both concerts in Sheffield and exploring the Peak District, making it a hit with weekend travelers.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that the village location means you’ll need to plan transportation to and from concerts—especially late at night. Also, since pets aren’t allowed anymore, those traveling with furry friends should look elsewhere.

The Bottom Line

If you're looking to pair your concert experience with countryside charm and a good night's sleep, The George offers a stylish and serene stay just outside the Sheffield spotlight.

Not a bad stay, but...

Liked: Well situated, attractive interiors , outdoor patio. Pleasant furnishings.
Disliked: No comfortable chair in bedroom. In bathroom toilet roll holder poorly placed behind loo, and soap dispensers in bath too high to reach when sitting in bath. No fridges in rooms. Our evening meal was preordered at hotel’s request but we waited more than an hour for it.

Underwhelming

Disliked: Unfortunately quite under whelming. We booked here as the final stay on our Derbyshire road trip on the day of our 1st wedding anniversary. For £253 for the night we was expecting a bit of a treat, luxury stay (say in comparison to your usual stop overs in Inns) and we were excited on arrival. We were left feeling a little disappointed and a bit annoyed at the amount we had spent. We had stayed at a hotel in Castleton the night before that was over a £100 cheaper and a much better room in terms of comfort and facilities. It feels with this place the price tag is due to the location, not the quality of the room (for example 2 english tea bags and no conditioner in the bathroom for £253 seems a bit mad). We both woke up with stiff backs from how uncomfortable the bed was this morning. For the evening we had booked to eat in the pub restaurant. We ordered two Aperol Spritz that came barely orange that had been really watered down with soda water, and then waited over an hour from ordering for pie and mash. The pie was meant to be Steak and Ale, and the steak tasted good but there seemed to be no Ale and it was quite dry, there was also barely any veg with it, a tiny pot of gravy and one scoop of mash, which for nearly £20 seems insane. Understandably Saturday will be busy but we had waited 75 minutes last time my husband checked his watch , no one asked in this time if we would like anymore drinks or advised the kitchen was busy, and no one checked on our meal. We went up to bed after tea and left before breakfast as we thought the food may not be worth it and also didn't want to risk another wait for over an hour before hitting the road (reading reviews I can see this has happened to other guests). The duty manager was friendly, and she did give us a warm welcome, but generally this place, for us, was not good value for money at all and if this hadn't nt been part of a wider road trip, would have been a disappointment for our anniversary.
