Would stay again....would dine elsewhere

Liked: The rooms were lovely, great sized bath after a day of walking it was just what the doctor ordered. Plenty of storage space for those staying longer. A very ambient, characteristic pub area, cute little library room tucked into a crack in the wall. Car park next to the pub which was secured with a code, this was handy. Overall comfortable.
Disliked: No lifts if you have heavy bags, and no offer to help with luggage so if you need it, so ask for ground floor. The food was good, the service not so good. Wasn't asked of we'd like to book a table to dine on arrival, so when we came back downstairs we were told there was no availability to eat in the restaurant. This could perhaps be a question on booking/arrival so those staying with you have some priority over dining with you too. I got the lamb and the braised red cabbage was burned, noone did a check back after serving so I was unable send back my food, it was one of the most expensive dishes in the menu, so I had high expectations over quality which was not delivered. We was also not offered our bill, infact we left to find a shop to stock up on drinks etc and didn't settle our bill until we returned. Had we been people passing through that could have easily been a free meal someone willing to dine and Ditch. When trying to sleep we had a room that must have been directly above the dining area, as could hear tables and chairs being dragged around the floors during clean down. Breakfast was great, some lovely options. Seemed a little understaffed, which had a negative effect on the attitude of the server,
