Quirky historic hotel, great staff...

Liked: Staff were excellent, helpful & friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Easy & quick check in. The hotel has a great historic vibe & is wonderfully quirky. The food was another highlight, it was very good indeed (we had dinner at the hotel, as well the cooked breakfast) with sizeable portions & it was well presented & nicely cooked.
Disliked: Our room was rather scruffy, the bedside cabinets were scratched & missing paint & one large window pane had a large crack in it. Unfortunately the toilet hadn't been properly cleaned from the previous guests which wasn't so nice. There were some cobwebs & it needed some dusting. The low point was the bed: the worst soggy mattress I've tried to sleep on for years. It was like trying to sleep on a marshmallow! The mattress needs replacing urgently, something I did report to reception. Overall, the room had great character & potential, but needs some urgent repainting, regular dusting & fixing the minor issues.
