Great stay at a great...

Liked: Cute historical building with a lot of charm. Lots of add-ons like champagne at check-in. Great staff who checked in to make sure we were comfortable.
Disliked: Not a lot of things to do by the hotel. If you have a car, it’s easy enough to get around.

Great boutique hotel with friendly...

Liked: The Francis is a stately but small hotel walking distance from Portland port and most of town, but out of the mainstream. The parking is free (unusual!). The room was sizeable and they give you a voucher to use towards breakfast in their affiliate hotel across the street - which was ok. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the basic amenities were good.

Poor value for money

Liked: The staff were very good.
Disliked: Converting an old house into a hotel is.always a challenge but even so that has not been done well at the Francis Hotel. Our room was noisy, not just because of the outside road but internal noise simply from people walking across the floor of the room above. The bathroom arrangements were not good, the toilet door diid not close. Security was poor, anyone could have walked in from the street and there were a lot of homeless people around. There was no safe in the room even though that was included in our booking confirmation.There is no catering in the hotel, we were given vouchers for $15 to get breakfast in a cafe opposite. The menu there was limited, we had to pay extra for coffee and on the second day of our stay a staff member was rude.

Liked: This is a lovely restored building. We really appreciated the care taken around colour choice and comfort. We received a very warm welcome and were upgraded to a King size room.
Disliked: I did feel rather annoyed about the additional charges on top of the basic rate quoted. Hotel charge and tourist tax. That said it didn’t diminish our experience whilst we were there.
