A lovely place to stay...

Liked: This is a wonderful old hotel in a charming town. It is comfortable, clean and conveniently located in the town center in a very walkable area. The old bar is very nice and there is a restaurant that also provides bar food. A lovely place to stay.

Excellent hotel, good value

Liked: Location, historical venue, good breakfast. Good value.
Disliked: Roast beef dinner, not generous on beef

Liked: It is always a pleasure to stay at this lovely hotel of great character. The staff are all very friendly, helpful and professional, and make you feel very welcome. The hotel is beautifully tradiditional with exceptional decor and there is always a welcoming, happy atmosphere in all areas. The bedrooms are exceptionally comfortable and the bar areas are very pleasant places to sit and relax. Dinner was excellent, and I noticed this time that the real ale was really good and is obviously well looked after.We look forward to our next visit.

Poor communication

Liked: Love the age and character of the hotel.
Disliked: The lift had broken approx 6 weeks before our stay. We had booked a mobility room for my 84 yr old mother. No one told us that the lift was out until 3 days before our visit, which meant we would lose the cost of our train tickets if we cancelled. My mother struggled to climb one flight of stairs so could not get to a properly equipped mobility bedroom. This meant she was unable to shower and struggled to use the toilet unassisted throughout our visit.

Pleasant

Liked: Very nice Anchient building.
Disliked: I didn't feel the front desk people actually wanted to deal with the guests. They took money from my card in case I wanted to buy something and it was not all returned. I will not visit again.

Restaurant staff that we met...

Liked: Restaurant staff were impeccable and so attentive.
Disliked: Rooms were stifling hot. The one small fan failed to make an impact during the night, and we couldn’t leave the balcony door open (which was not easy to open/close) as there were stairs and a gate to the room and were accessible to anyone wishing to access. The balcony only had one chair, which made it inaccessible to the other person to sit outside. The balcony does need attention as does the furniture, as soon as a glass on wine was placed on the table it toppled and a £13 glass of wine was lost (please note, the glass was caught and therefore the hotel didn’t incur any loss).Single beds are very narrow and very soft. Lights beside the beds - don’t work. No information available in regard to WiFi connection. Have contacted the hotel three times with regard to potential loss of glasses. Lacklustre response and no attempt to get information to us as promised.
