The Spotlight on The Elephant Hotel

Eclectic charm by the river, minutes from Reading

Modern comfort meets boutique character at The Elephant Hotel, a stylish village hotel in Pangbourne, just a short hop from Reading, Newbury, and Oxford. Set beside the River Thames, this hotel combines handcrafted Indian décor with a relaxed, character-filled vibe, perfect for guests looking for something a little different from the typical chain experience. With quick access to the M4 and a short walk to Pangbourne rail station, it’s a convenient and quirky base for concert-goers.

Why Concert-goers love it

Fans heading to shows in nearby Reading love this hotel's easy access via train — Pangbourne Station is just a few minutes' walk, getting you into town quickly without the hassle of parking. After a high-energy night, guests appreciate the peaceful village location, far enough from the noise but close enough for convenience. With free WiFi, free parking, and check-in from 15:00, it's easy to arrive, unwind, and get prepped for the night ahead.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a fun, offbeat place to crash
  • Solo travelers hunting down that bucket-list gig
  • Couples planning a romantic, music-filled weekend
  • Fans wanting a quieter post-concert recovery space surrounded by nature
  • Budget-conscious music fans who still want a stylish stay

Food and Drink Options

The Elephant doesn’t skimp on food. The on-site restaurant, The Herd, serves up locally-sourced steaks cooked over an open fire — perfect for a pre-show meal. BaBar offers a bistro menu and drinks in a relaxed setting, and when the weather’s right, you can dine al fresco in the enclosed garden. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the dining options are generous and staff are happy to accommodate late diners when possible. Breakfast is available the next morning — ideal for those slow, post-concert wake-ups.

Nightlife Options

While Pangbourne itself is a quiet riverside village, the hotel’s cozy bar is a great spot to unwind with a local craft drink. If you're after more action, Reading’s buzzing nightlife is a short train ride away — think pubs, late-night bars, and live music venues that go well into the night.

What People Say

Guests love the hotel’s quirky décor, friendly staff, and peaceful location. Many mention how refreshing it is to stay somewhere with personality, and the food in The Herd receives frequent praise. The location is frequently highlighted for its convenient access to Reading and scenic riverside walks.

Areas for Improvement

Some reviewers mention that the rooms can feel a touch warm in summer, and that sound insulation between rooms isn’t perfect — though the quiet village surroundings make up for it. Also, while transport into Reading is easy, late-night trains may be limited, so plan ahead or book a cab.

The Bottom Line

A stylish and peaceful escape just outside the city, The Elephant Hotel is a perfect blend of charm and convenience for concert-goers looking to stay close — but not too close — to the action.

Very nice Hotel, but shame...

Liked: The evening meal was really lovely and the dining room was very atmospheric. The tea facilities in the bedroom were excellent and the bath products very nice! Very clean too.
Disliked: The sink in our twin room had a massive crack in it, which had been taped up with masking tape! The door to the bathroom was sliding, and very noisy to open & close. It was so close to the twin bed, it had to be closed, as you could see straight into the toilet!

Passable

Disliked: The hotel had no record of my booking. I presented evidence on my phone. Fortunately there were two rooms available. At check out we were over charged by £10 each. After questioning this was reimbursed without apology or explanation

Very good

Liked: Though a bit shabby and the whole Raj vibe very outdated, it is clean and very comfortable.
Disliked: I used to work in this hotel in 1977 when standards and professionalism were very high.Over the past few years, we have stayed here many times.17.00 on a Saturday and the reception was closed. l was not booked into the room l had paid extra for.Since breakfast was not included l thought it was very expensive. For £125 l think it was penny pinching not to include breakfast

Liked: Nice room, friendly staff
Disliked: Said ‘garden room’ on the booking but my room overlooked a busy road. Couldn’t therefore have window open overnight. Breakfast too expensive to even consider.

Liked: Very individual styleLocationComfortable bedMost staff helpful
Disliked: Bit grubby- entrance and bar. Heating stuck on with no explanation or attempt to open an exterior door. The girl on the bar had a fan which she never moved away from! Didn't seem as if anyone was managing the hotel.
