The Spotlight on The Drake Hotel

Classic Elegance Steps from the Stage

The Drake Hotel blends historic charm with modern comforts in a prime Chicago location. Built in 1920, this iconic hotel offers sweeping views of Lake Michigan and is just a short stroll from Oak Street Beach, high-end shopping, and some of the city's most popular entertainment venues. With deluxe bedding, marble bathrooms, and a touch of old-school glamour, it’s a favorite for travelers who want a stylish stay with substance.

Why Concert-goers love it

Music fans appreciate The Drake’s central location that puts them minutes from live music spots and legendary Chicago venues. After a show, the quiet, elegant atmosphere is perfect for winding down. The hotel’s late 12:00 PM checkout is a bonus for those who stayed up late. While the Drake isn’t party central, its proximity to nightlife means you can get your fill—and then retreat to peace and quiet.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends looking for a luxe launchpad near the action
- Solo travelers on a concert pilgrimage
- Couples planning a romantic music-filled weekend
- Fans who want a quiet, classy post-show escape
- Budget-conscious music fans who don’t mind splurging a little for historic vibes

Food and Drink Options

The Drake’s Palm Court is a must for classic afternoon tea or a pre-show cocktail. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the hotel does offer on-site dining and a convenience store for late-night snacks. Breakfast is available and especially appreciated after a night of music. For more variety, you’re steps from restaurants and cafes along the Magnificent Mile.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself leans more toward quiet sophistication than rowdy nightlife, it’s within easy reach of bars, lounges, and clubs. Grab a nightcap in the hotel’s elegant bar or head out to nearby Gold Coast spots for something livelier. Live music isn’t featured on-site, but you’re never far from a venue in this part of town.

What People Say

Guests rave about the classic architecture, beautiful lake views, and the hotel’s timeless atmosphere. Many highlight the spacious rooms and comfortable beds as perfect for post-concert recovery. The location is frequently praised for being walkable to venues, shopping, and dining.

Areas for Improvement

Some travelers mention that certain rooms feel a bit dated—but most agree it adds to the hotel’s charm. If you’re craving ultra-modern features or a high-energy vibe, this may feel more serene than expected.

The Bottom Line

The Drake Hotel is ideal for concert-goers who want a classy, comfortable retreat close to the music without sacrificing charm or convenience.

Very good

Liked: For only $20 extra per night, we were able to upgrade to a larger room with a bathroom on either side. I wouldn't call it a suite, exactly -- the only chairs were the one at the desk and a small one wedged into an alcove near the closet -- but it had two bathrooms, which was hugely convenient. Also a plus: friendly staff, from the doormen and valets to the bellmen to the front desk. The Drake is a classic, and you don't have to explain where you're headed when you catch a cab.
Disliked: As sometimes happens with older hotels, the plumbing was quirky -- and loud. The water temperature in one shower fluctuated during use for no apparent reason. In the other bathroom -- and again, hooray for having two -- the toilet at one point spit upward like a geyser. There were random audible gurgles from each, apparently in response to water usage in other rooms. For presumably the same reason, the geyser unit occasionally decided on its own to drain. There was almost an entertainment value to it all.Be forewarned that the Drake uses a peculiar numbering system for its rooms. Ours, 378, was the highest on the floor -- but it wasn't at the end of the hall. The numbers wrap around, so we were partway down the hallway back in the direction of the elevator bank.

Beautiful. Gorgeous surroundings, appointments

Liked: I have always wanted to stay at the Drake, due to its reputation, older, iconic, etcetera. No disappointments. The room selected for us was beyond expectations. Beautiful, 6 huge windows. The bed was super comfortable, great linens. Our only disappointment-room service. We wanted a lovely breakfast. Breakfast was delivered in all paper, disposable service. Unhappy with that. We wanted real Serviceware .
Disliked: Above, re: breakfast.. We love a proper Tea. We attended. The service and the atmosphere were fabulous. The servers were impeccable. The food was only mediocre at best

Liked: The staff are awesome, we had left a horrid Air BnB after a 12 hour delay on our flights, luckily The Drake had space, they were lovely.
