The Spotlight on The Crown

Historic Charm Just Outside the City Buzz

A beautifully preserved 16th-century coaching inn, The Crown in Old Amersham blends rich history with modern comfort. Located just a short drive from London’s major music venues, it’s a peaceful retreat with easy access to the M40, M25, M1, and M4 — ideal for concert-goers looking to escape the city noise after the show. With free Wi-Fi, free parking, and a mix of classic and contemporary rooms (including the famous four-poster suite from 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'), it’s a memorable base for your music-filled weekend.

Why Concert-goers love it

The Crown is a top choice for fans heading to gigs in and around London thanks to its easy motorway access and peaceful location in historic Amersham. After the noise of a packed venue, guests appreciate the quiet, countryside atmosphere for a restful night’s sleep. With flexible check-in from 15:00 and check-out at 11:00, it suits late-night arrivals and slow mornings. Free on-site parking is a bonus for those driving in from venues.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends wanting a character-filled stay with space to unwind
- Solo travelers on a musical pilgrimage looking for comfort and charm
- Couples turning a concert into a romantic getaway
- Fans needing a quiet place to decompress after the show
- Budget-conscious music lovers looking for value beyond the city limits

Food and Drink Options

Dine in style at the AA Rosette-awarded Hawkyns Restaurant, where fine dining meets historic charm. For something more casual, relax with a drink in the on-site lounge and bar. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the bar stays open late enough for a nightcap after your gig. Breakfast is available — perfect for a slow start after a late night.

Nightlife Options

While Amersham is more mellow than metropolitan, you’ll find cozy pubs and local bars just a short stroll away. If your night doesn’t end with the encore, enjoy a drink in the hotel’s inviting bar area or explore the charming High Street for a laid-back vibe.

What People Say

Reviews highlight the hotel’s beautiful historic interiors, excellent dining, and comfortable beds. Many guests rave about the easy access to motorways, making it a convenient base for events in London or nearby towns. The character-filled rooms and peaceful setting earn repeated praise as a perfect post-concert retreat.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that the historic building can mean creaky floorboards and walls that carry sound — part of the charm, but worth noting if you’re a light sleeper. Room temperatures can vary, especially in summer, so check ahead for fan or AC options.

The Bottom Line

The Crown offers a charming, restful escape for concert-goers who want easy access to the action — but a peaceful place to land after the encore.

Pleasant

Liked: Historic hotel in a lovely town. Quirky room. Comfortable bed. Good breakfast
Disliked: The room was overpriced. It was noisy, as facing the High Street. There was one packet of biscuits in the hospitality tray. There was no one to give us our key on our return to the hotel at 11pm, despite various members of staff chatting in the bar area. We had not been warned that reception would be closed when we handed in our key as we left for the evening. We feel the hotel is trading on its reputation rather than giving value for money.

Fabulous listed building. Basic decor,...

Liked: Building is lovely, staff nice. Outside rooms look lovely in Courtyard. Great outdoor space
Disliked: Firstly I am always a glass half full person.... BUT need to be honest here, limited comfort in main building bedrooms, no pictures, white walls, minimalist not in a cool way, more of a punishment kind of way! Same in bar and restaurant and breakfast room (wooden basic chairs like a school classroom) and 'abandoned' chairs under the fireplace. I think if it's aiming to be charming it needs to add some softer furnishings. The snug in reception had throws draped on old looking chairs. First bedroom we had, no wardrobe, no storage just coat pegs. Asked to be moved rooms due to industrial aircon unit on wall outside and noise of the kitchen at 6am (room 9) and we felt like we had been given last room in hotel which should not be rented out. Reception chap was great - moved us we were lucky as Sunday night so no bookings I was told. That said, the next room same sparce decor. Paid £400 for 2 nights (and it's £3 extra if you want a non filter coffee with your breakfast)!! Price is excessive for this hotel, paying for location and the fact it's a 16th century coaching inn. Regrettably I won't stay here again if I visit Amersham.

Probably won’t stay again

Liked: I’ve stayed before but had a bad experience including being woken up several times with a false fire alarm in the early morning and then getting food poisoning as a result of the breakfast. I tried to contact the hotel to inform them of the food poisoning but struggled to get through
Disliked: I refer to my earlier answer!

An interesting inn but "dog...

Liked: We had a small room (18) in the main building but it was fine for our one night stay. The small table outside in a small courtyard was welcome, although being able to enter the room via the locked door would be useful to dog owners. The good in the evening was excellent and the waiting staff great.
Disliked: On checking in, we were told that breakfast would be in the breakfast room, and that would be perfectly fine even with our small, quiet dog.At breakfast, we went to sit in that room which was empty bar one other guest. We were told in no uncertain terms that we couldn't dig there and had to go into the bar area, where we were shown to a table in the far corner. On questioning this, I wax told that they serve breakfast there too, when they have many rooms occupied and wanting breakfast. Why late coming guests couldn't be sat in the bar area, wasn't explained. When o said that the only Reston egg we were put there was the dog, the lady on the reception desk didn't answer. I ordered the eggs Benedict for breakfast. The muffin had been toasted and then put on the griddle. The dish just tasted of burnt muffin, so I had to send it back. This is the first time ever, at breakfast. Overall, this spoiled our stay.

Overnight stay on way to...

Liked: Convenient location. Good dinner and breakfast. Helpful staff.
Disliked: We knew the building was old but we hadn’t expected the floorboards in our room to creak quite so much! Otherwise nothing really.

Lovely place to stay, in...

Liked: Excellent breakfast with superb service!! Lots of options and the hot breakfast was made to serve.
Disliked: We didn't appreciate the fact that we emailed in advance to ask if there was an extra fee for bringing our dogs. The reply from the hotel was "no", that it was included, but on arrival we had to pay an extra £20 fee... We politely said that we had an email saying that there was no extra fee which was sadly ignored and we still had to pay it.

I was staying there with...

Liked: Nice location in the town but far from the station.
Disliked: No lift in the building A lot of stairs to climb. The stones courtyard into the building was difficult to negotiate with 2 suitcases. I want to stay at a property that has a lift.
