The Spotlight on The Cross Scythes

Country Comfort with a Sheffield Soundtrack

Modern comfort meets countryside charm at The Cross Scythes, a 4-star hotel nestled on the southern edge of Sheffield. Just over 11 miles from local concert venues like the FlyDSA Arena, this peaceful retreat offers a relaxing base for music lovers who want to escape the noise without straying too far from the action. Surrounded by gardens and a terrace, it’s an inviting spot to unwind after a night out.

The rooms are well-appointed with private bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and thoughtful extras like coffee machines and electric kettles. Some even come with balconies—perfect for that morning-after cup of tea.

Why Concert-goers love it

This hotel strikes the right chord for concert-goers thanks to its peaceful location away from city noise, while still being close enough to major venues for a quick drive or taxi ride. Free private parking is a bonus for those hitting the show by car, and the 3:00 PM check-in time allows for a relaxed arrival. The on-site bar and restaurant make it easy to grab a bite or drink post-gig without needing to trek far.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a chill home base with space to relax
  • Solo travelers attending a dream concert who want peace and quiet after the show
  • Couples making a music-filled weekend getaway
  • Fans needing a quieter recovery spot after a high-energy night out
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who want value without sacrificing comfort

Food and Drink Options

The on-site restaurant and bar serve up hearty meals and drinks—ideal for pre-show dinners or post-concert chats. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the bar stays open late enough for a nightcap. Morning-after recovery is easy with breakfast available on-site, and there are local eateries within a short drive for more options.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself doesn’t offer live music, the on-site bar is a cozy spot for a quiet pint or glass of wine. For those wanting more action, it's a short ride into Sheffield’s city center, where you’ll find lively pubs, clubs, and music bars to keep the night going.

What People Say

Guests praise the friendly service, clean and comfortable rooms, and the hotel’s welcoming pub atmosphere. The location is frequently described as peaceful yet convenient, and many appreciate the free parking and great food and drink options on-site.

Areas for Improvement

While ideal for a quiet escape, the hotel is about a 20–30 minute drive from central Sheffield, so those wanting to walk to venues might prefer something more central. Also, no 24-hour front desk means late-night check-ins may require a heads-up.

The Bottom Line

A relaxed, country-style retreat with easy access to Sheffield’s music scene—perfect for concert-goers who want comfort, quiet, and convenience.

New Owners, New Experience

Liked: I've stayed in the Cross Scythes several times a year - it's an old pub on the edge of the city with 4 rooms, and a good-sized car park, on a bus route. The pub is a great base for meeting people, visiting Sheffield, or conversely, for walks onto Blackamoor and into the Peak District. This was my first visit since the Northern Collective took over the pub in early 2025, so I'll focus on changes from when Stonegate operated it.A big positive are the staff - ALL were friendly, attentive, efficient and helpful, and gave the impression they were there to enhance your visit. A real pleasure. A manager now lives on site, which improves safety at night. The food was so much better than provided by the previous owners, the range of beers is not just the standard rack of lagers, and the wine line is more extensive and imaginative than many hotels. The public areas have had a facelift that's improved the look and ambience, with a distinction now of a demarcated dining area. Outside, the signage looks classier, and the tired astroturf under the outside tables is now smartly paved. As a result, on both the nights I was there, and even mid-mornings for people meeting for brunch, the place had more buzz and atmosphere than in recent times.
Disliked: Room 4 continues to be charged at the same rates as the other rooms with balconies. Given its wee size, that's a bit unfair. It should be cheaper, either as a single, or with the label "Economy Double" or "Compact", like other accommodation providers do. Booking is now only possible through booking.com - there's no longer any loyalty scheme or ability to book directSo far, the re-development has been largely restricted to the public areas, rather than the bedrooms, and small accessories, like a box of tissues or the coffee-pod machine, have gone. I'm not sure if the shower heads have changed, but the flow isn't as strong, and unlike previous visits I couldn't get the water as hot as I preferBreakfast is no longer included in the room rate, which has remained roughly the same. So overall value for money for hotel guests has decreased.Overall though, the place appears to be getting a lot more love from its new owners, and its turnaround is positive for guests and the community

Disappointing.

Disliked: The room and bathroom were quite small and the bathroom smelly so not nice to use.A bottle from the previous occupants had been left on the carpet.I had paid to have a balcony but hadn’t realised it overlooked the front car park and main road and was also open to the next two balconies.I don’t like leaving a negative review but think this room was very overpriced.
