Good housekeeping standards and excellent staff. Spoiled by urgent need of refurbishment.

Liked: Staff were efficient, friendly without overdoing it! Room was spacious and had once been well decorated. The room was spotless from a housekeeping point of view and the bed was comfortable. Everything worked properly. Breakfast (our only meal) was delicious, speedily attended to and generous. Grounds were spacious and well tended.
Disliked: The tone was set by the entrance gates and pillars which had plainly not been decorated in a long while. The front door was kicked and chipped and in dire need of a coat of paint with dirty brass handles and finger plates. It was so uninviting that we nearly walked away and found somewhere else to stay. The whole hotel had a run-down feel to it, carpets stained and rucked (looked as though they had been soaked at some point), paintwork very tired. The furniture was slightly dirty and worn. The bathroom was somewhat inadequate with an over bath shower in a narrow and difficult to access bath. The shower controls were miles away from the shower head. All the fittings creaked ominously as though they might leave their positions without warning.
