Liked: The location of The Artist House is excellent, just a brief walk away from Duval St. and close to most of what you’ll likely be doing in Key West. The room we were in was called Eugene’s Studio Suite which is located on the main floor adjacent to the kitchen and office. The room was plenty big, the bed was comfortable, and the air conditioning was great to beat the heat, especially during our August stay. There was always coffee and tea available in the kitchen, and they had a cold filtered water dispenser right outside our room we used regularly before our excursions out in the heat. The staff were very friendly and responsive when we needed to have room service clean up towels, trash, etc… in our room or when we wanted to print boarding passes, etc… The house itself, though under repair/construction, was quite beautiful and had great character.
Disliked: Prior to our arrival we let the host know my wife had dietary needs (gluten and dairy free) and that although we didn’t expect them to go out of their way to accommodate, it would nice for her to have some breakfast (typically breakfast is easy with these needs). During our 6 day stay, my wife ate Cheerios, as all their other breakfast options either had gluten or dairy in them. We understand that these accommodations can be difficult, but when you agree to accommodate….then it’s best to follow through. This brings me to the breakfast part of Bed & Breakfast. There really isn’t much of anything, and quite honestly, The Artist House should change to an “Inn” and not a “Bed and Breakfast”. We’ve stayed in over a dozen Bed and Breakfasts across the country and this was the most bizarre breakfast we’ve ever seen. They cater in with pre-made items that they put in a heated tray, and there were several mornings we needed to get to an activity (jet skiing, snorkeling) and 8:30am came and went with nothing to be found. Breakfast here is terrible, plain and simple.Next is our room. The room itself was ok, but right outside it is their “office” which is a desk and a computer along with a guest chair you can lounge in. Adjacent to it is the kitchen. So basically if the staff is in working, or guests are in the Kitchen or the common chair, it can be very loud, and there’s no sound buffering with the room door. Also, right outside our window is were they keep the trash, so every morning we heard them cleaning up (they can’t help it), but it was yet more noise around this room. There were several days where staff were working until 9:30pm…right outside our room. We just felt very exposed with little to no privacy. The other detractor to our room was the bathroom. The shower was very low water pressure (largely an issue with city water pressure) and it just didn’t fit the room at all as it was very drab and outdated.

Thrilling Old Town Vibe
Liked: The service of the staff is outstanding. They made us feel special and at home from the first minute. The house has a very interesting history and famous thrilling story but you need to hear it first hand. The rooms are large and very comfortable. All well airconditioned. The location is excellent and close to the main attractions. The breakfast are excellent with a wide selection. The selection of coffee is also excellent. Happy hour at 4pm is brilliant and the hosts are very generous with wine, beer , cake and other snacks. The splash pool was a life saver. The one day was 100+F and we spent 3 hours in the pool cooling down. It was such a social occasion with other guests.
Disliked: Nothing to complain about. This is a typical old property and one must be patient with small niggles such as a leaking washing basin in the bathroom. Free parking is hard to find and the hosts recommended safe paid parking one block away but it cost $40 per day.
