The Spotlight on The 8th Maine Regiment Lodge and Museum

Historic Island Charm Just a Ferry Ride from the Action

Step back in time at The 8th Maine Regiment Lodge and Museum, a beautifully preserved 1800s-style building located on scenic Peaks Island. With antique furnishings, ocean views, and a peaceful atmosphere, this lodge offers a unique and quiet getaway just a short ferry ride from downtown Portland. Whether you're crashing after a high-energy concert or soaking in the coastal vibes, this spot blends history, character, and comfort.

Why Concert-goers love it

Though it’s not in the heart of the city, concert-goers appreciate the easy ferry access to Portland, putting you within reach of top venues while offering a quiet retreat at the end of the night. The lodge's peaceful setting is perfect for unwinding post-show. Plus, with a 3:00 PM check-in and an 11:00 AM check-out, there's a bit of flexibility for travelers coming and going on different schedules.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends looking for a unique, shared experience
- Solo travelers wanting a reflective, scenic base
- Couples planning a romantic weekend with music and ocean views
- Fans needing a quiet post-concert recovery space
- Budget-conscious music lovers open to shared bathrooms and rustic charm

Food and Drink Options

While there’s no on-site restaurant or room service, Peaks Island has several walkable eateries and cafés nearby. Guests often grab a bite before hopping the ferry or enjoy a meal on the island with views of the harbor. For late-night cravings, plan ahead—options are limited after hours, so packing some snacks is a smart move.

Nightlife Options

This lodge is more about peaceful evenings than late-night partying. However, hop on the nearby ferry and you’re just minutes from Portland’s vibrant nightlife scene, including live music bars, breweries, and lounges. Back on the island, you can sip wine on the terrace under the stars.

What People Say

Guests rave about the historic atmosphere, friendly staff, and stunning ocean views. Many highlight the unique experience of staying in a museum-like lodge filled with character and charm. The quiet, relaxing vibe is a major plus for those recovering from a busy night in town.

Areas for Improvement

The shared bathrooms might not be for everyone, and you’ll want to be mindful of the ferry schedule so you don’t miss your ride back after a show. Also, the antique charm comes with limited modern amenities, so don’t expect luxury—this is about experience, not extravagance.

The Bottom Line

For concert-goers seeking a memorable, quiet retreat with a historic twist, The 8th Maine Regiment Lodge and Museum offers a one-of-a-kind stay just a short ferry ride from Portland’s music scene.

Old School Summer Camp Style...

Liked: Throwback camp style lodging with private bedrooms and shared bathrooms/kitchen. Beautiful historic property right on the water and close to the center of town by the ferry. Not fancy, no TVs; but the friendly staff are a great resource for what to see and do on the island. Also you can do nothing, read, sit, talk, whatever. Nice vibes.
Disliked: Pillows were not comfortable.

Places like this may not...

Liked: I loved staying at this lodging house ... it is so different from a hotel, it is like going back in time and having an experience that might have been very similar to what people experienced a hundred years ago. It gave me a warm feeling to stay in a place where trust and trustworthiness were built into the experience. Quilts, antiques, a door with a transom. The awkwardness of using the shared bathroom was offset by its novelty and the feeling of living in history. The guests kitchens were the most amazing tie to the old ways. The view and chill provided the supreme luxury of relaxation that you can't get in fussy expensive pretentious resorts filled with people who are intent on getting their money's worth. This place felt soul-invigorating. Like I left there as a slightly better person.
Disliked: I needed a three prong adapter to plug in my computer ... they had some available, so it wasn't a big deal. There were noises from the hallway, but my ear plugs took care of that. The door rattled as the breezes blew, but I just closed the door on a hand-towel and there was no rattle. To me, these little inconveniences were kind of fun to navigate. If you are fussy and prone to complaining, don't stay here ... you'll ruin the beautiful vibe.

Lovely, quiet, picturesque place to...

Liked: Simple, clean rooms, historic building, outdoor shower facing ocean, location great. My room looked out onto the ocean, staff friendly and helpful. Price was very good for an ocean view room.
Disliked: I didn’t mind the shared bath, though some might. It was nearby and clean and the other guests were very tidy and considerate. I wish places for food were closer by as I didn’t take the car.
