The Sunset Lodge fit our...

Liked: While obviously an older motel, the room had been updated, nicely decorated and was very clean. It was small (single queen room), but perfect for our needs. Heat was easily controlled and quiet. There was a nice little table and 2 chairs in the room that were helpful when we brought meals back to the room to eat. TV worked fine. Lots of channels, if that’s your thing. Bed was comfortable. Pillows were good enough—not the very best I have slept on, but they didn’t cause any sleep issues. The shower was great, better than at home, actually (minus the bathroom window). Staff was nice and helpful, with good communication. You could tell they cared about their customers. I appreciated that they had quiet hours posted between 10 pm and 7 am. It was April, so not as busy as when tourist season starts. No issues checking in/out or with code for the door lock.
Disliked: The light right outside the front window/door made it hard to sleep. The curtains were good, but the curtain rod wasn’t long enough to allow the curtains to be pulled wider, so at midnight it looked like it could have been noon by the amount of light coming in around the edge of the curtains. So, bring a sleep mask if you are used to sleeping in a dark room. Also, the window in the bathroom, despite having a coating/texture on the glass to make the window dimpled and not perfectly see through, it still made me uncomfortable taking a shower. A curtain of some kind or pull down shade would have been nice. Maybe it looks different from the outside looking in, but had their been a dog standing in the grass outside that window, I could have looked out and told you what size, what color and which end was the head. I showered regardless, because what else are you going to do, but it was unnerving. It is close to a major road, as are most all the hotels in the area, so bring a fan or white noise machine if traffic noise bothers you. We always do because of my husband’s tinnitus anyway…but surprisingly traffic was pretty quiet, but again, it was April in the UP, so not a lot of tourist traffic, yet.

Exceptional

Liked: There is nothing to not like about this property. The staff is friendly and very helpful and the location is excellent with easy access to everything being literally right on Route 2. The rooms are small but spotless with a comfortable bed and blazing hot shower. Affordable, clean and comfortable more than makes up for lack of amenities. Highly recommend.
Disliked: Nothing. It is above and beyond for a stay long or short.

Was the cherry on top...

Liked: We arrived late and called ahead they were very nice gave us code to get in. Arrived around 10 pm. Very small, Very cold, Heat was not able to heat room, floor to touch was so cold, Bathroom was pretty remodelled ,but no heat and was so cold you had to leave door open to keep you warm, We wore coats and soaks to bed, Was no weatherstripping on door woke to snow on and ice on floor. We were going to let staff know but received an emergency call from home and had to drive right back to where we came from. Was so tiny, nowhere to set stuff. Probably great for a summer cabin not winter. Staff was great!
