The Spotlight on Strathcona Hotel

Historic charm and nightlife in the heart of Victoria

Modern comfort meets local flavor at the Strathcona Hotel, a lively and historic spot nestled right in downtown Victoria. Just a short walk from top music venues and cultural attractions, this hotel blends vintage character with energetic nightlife. With unique amenities like a rooftop sand volleyball court, multiple bars, and a built-in nightclub, it’s a great home base for concert-goers who want to stay close to the action.
Rooms are clean, cozy, and equipped with free WiFi and cable TV—everything you need for a comfortable stay after a big night out.

Why Concert-goers love it

A few minutes’ walk puts you at popular concert spots like the Royal Theater and the Inner Harbor music scene. After the show, you’re already home—no rideshare needed. The on-site nightclub and pubs keep the party going if you’re not ready to wind down, and the central location means late-night food and transport are easy to find. While check-in starts at 4:00 PM and check-out is at 11:00 AM, the 24/7 energy of this hotel makes it feel flexible for night owls.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking to stay where the action is
  • Solo travelers catching a dream concert
  • Couples making a music-filled weekend of it
  • Fans who want nightlife without commuting
  • Budget-conscious travelers who want value in a central location

Food and Drink Options

Hungry after the encore? The Sticky Wicket Pub and Restaurant serves up hearty fare, and Big Bad John’s dive bar offers an unforgettable local experience. While there’s no mention of 24/7 room service, the hotel’s multiple on-site dining spots and its central location mean food is never far away. Breakfast is available, letting you refuel at your own pace the next morning.

Nightlife Options

If you’re not ready for the night to end, head to the hotel’s own Distrikt nightclub for live DJs and dancing. Prefer something low-key? Enjoy a craft beer at the pub or challenge your crew to a round of darts or billiards in the games room. You’re also just steps from Victoria’s bar scene, with lounges and local breweries nearby.

What People Say

Guests rave about the location—it’s truly in the middle of everything. The on-site bars and club are a hit with those looking for nightlife, and many love the friendly staff and fun atmosphere. Reviewers also appreciate the value for money, especially given the amenities and central setting.

Areas for Improvement

The hotel’s nightlife appeal means it can get a bit noisy, especially on weekends—light sleepers may want to pack earplugs. Some rooms are on the smaller side or feel a bit dated, but most guests agree the energy and location more than make up for it.

The Bottom Line

If you want to be in the heart of Victoria’s nightlife and concert scene, the Strathcona Hotel delivers historic charm, energetic vibes, and unbeatable convenience.

Christine, Sooke, visiting Capital Ballroom Victoria

I love staying at the Strathcona Hotel because it has so many options for food, socials and is close to all amenities in Victoria. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are comfortable, quiet, clean and reasonably priced.

Liked: The staff are super friendly, efficient and helpful.

Location, location, location.

Liked: The only negative was that the mattress was too small for the bed base. As the bed frame was a similar colour to the floor, it was hard to see, I hit my left shin bone 3 times on the very sharp corner of the bed base, I still have a bruise & a lump.

Liked: Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was shiny bright and clean! Location was perfect.
Disliked: The room smelled like old cigarettes or something. It did fade away.

We gave the hotel staff...

Liked: Bathroom and mattress
Disliked: City view nonexistent. Being lied to by the front desk manager. My wife and I are retired and on a fixed income, but since it was my wife's 66 birthday and we were staying in the hotel for three nights I splurged (according to our finances) for a larger room and a "city view". We received the first floor with a view of the street. When I asked for a different room the manager said "we booked through Booking.com" I asked "is that a problem" because it sounded like it by the way he said it. He then said the hotel was sold out and had no more rooms, but he would show us a room on the fourth floor with a better view for an upcharge of $40 per night or $120 plus tax. we declined due to budget restraints. We then went to our room where I went on Booking.com and saw that there were rooms available on the site and I also went on the Hotel's web site and saw they were still offering rooms. Later that evening at 9:30 I asked the front desk clerk the status of the occupancy and he said there were still rooms available. It seems we were punished for booking through Booking.com and not booking directly. Our room was right above the liquor and wine store which was open late at night. I have included a photo of the window from outside out room it is the one on the lower left-hand corner with the drapes open.
