Liked: Staff were very friendly and helpful. Great location for Sheffield Meadowhall and the M1. Brilliant pub and Chinese just down the road.
Disliked: A little warm in the room but it was unseasonably warm for Sheffield.

A curate's egg - good...
Liked: Room was very spacious and clean. Staff on arrival were welcoming, helpful and pleasant. Breakfast was good. Location was excellent for a course being attended nearby. Reception areas cheerful. A good night's sleep. Potential for this to have a different offering to chain hotels of like quality. Potential for this to be a very nice, competitively priced hotel.
Disliked: My expectations were that the Staindrop would be fairly basic. Previous reviews were polarised. In many areas it exceeded my expectations - in others it didn't. My main issue is that this hotel seems lost between one that appears as though it is being brought up to a standard in some areas (reception areas bright and cheerful), but in other areas isn't quite there yet (or is in danger of being on a downward trend). So my observations: restaurant advertised, but only breakfast being provided; my room was wonderfully large, but to the point where it appeared functional and sparse, rather than comfortable; rooms were very warm (yes, it had been a very hot day and cooling the room was helped by a broken window catch); there were a few items of maintenance needed to the room (see previous) - minor niggles to me, but which might have annoyed others. There was also not the level of information about the hotel as there are in other hotels - nothing in room, lots of notes on reception. My sense is this could be a very good hotel, reasonably priced - its location was good for me, but may be not for others. Would I stay there again? If I thought it was on the up and I needed to be in that part of Sheffield, then yes; if not, then no - I'd settle for the predictablity of one of the familiar chains. I do wish the hotel well - it has lots of amenities and potential, and the greetings were warm and genuine - it just needs a bit of tlc in parts, and perhaps a few more guests to give it a buzz!
