Too Expensive for Uncomfortable Accommodation.
Liked: The room are too small for 6 beds. Also, the facilities are not a lot. There are no towels included, you have to pay to rent towels and there is no soap in the showers. I'm sorry but this accommodation is too expensive for what it is. I am also ok with the level of discomfort since it's and backpackers hostel, but it's too expensive for that.
Disliked: The staff was very nice! The location is perfect, close to the Rail station and the reception is open 24h. We enjoyed the fact that there are convention with the bars in the same streets.

Clean and affordable, excellent location,...
Liked: The location is fantastic! It's right beside the train station, and the Old Town neighborhood of Edinburgh, and is a ten minute walk to Calton hill and the National Gallery. The staff are kind and helpful and the have lots of information to help you plan your trip to Edinburgh and day trips around Scotland. They also have a free water bottle filling station, and free shampoo and liquid soap that you can refill to be eco friendly. The wifi worked quite well! From reading the reviews, I was a bit confused about whether or not there is a kitchen, and the answer is "sort of." Upstairs there is a combination of a luggage storage / lounge area with a counter, a small fridge, a microwave, a kettle and a sink. There were a few reusable cups and plates and bowls as well as disposable bamboo cutlery. There was free tea and coffee and sugar. So, if it helps keep the costs down, I am okay with using the make shift kitchen as I was able to be resourceful and creative and still keep to a budget by buying groceries I could cook in the microwave. I stayed in the 6 bed female dorm, and at first when I was looking at the photos of the room here on booking.com, the room looked kind of cramped and the beds on the bottom bunk looked like they were right on the floor, but don't be put off by the photo because the room feels a lot more spacious in real life than in the photo! Also the bottom bunk beds are not right on the floor even though it looks that way in the photo. I LOVED the privacy curtains!! This was my first time in a hostel with privacy curtains and I loved it! It was like sleeping in a cozy tent. The shower was wonderful too and had good shower power. There is some free luggage storage, but the lockers are smaller and you have to bring your own lock. After playing Tetris a bit I was able to fit my Osprey backpack in there. There are also lots of bigger lockers you have to pay for using a computer screen system.
Disliked: It would be nice to have a real kitchen, but if the kettle and microwave helps keep this hostel at it's affordable price, then it is worth it!

Exceptional
Liked: Location is excellent. Right next to train station. Staff were excellent and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. Temperature in dormitory was just right. Bed was comfortable. The 25% discount on food and drink for guests at Jake's Cafe next door was very welcome.
Disliked: Coming home again! As a little joke, why is it that the only person who doesn't hear an alarm go off at 6 O'clock in the morning is the person who set it lol!

good but could have been...
Liked: there was a port right at my bed which was great, felt comfortable being able to keep my phone charged so close to me.
Disliked: my boyfriends bed port did not work, my bed was taken throughout the night by a stranger and i had to go to the opposite side of the room which felt uncomfortable as it was unfamiliar and not what was planed, it was also extremely warm.
