Terribly disappointed

Liked: Breakfast was terrible. No chefs available due to staffing issues, so we were charged over £10.00 pp for dry toast
Disliked: Old fashioned place. The staff are mainly non English speakers who seem to have no idea what they are doing. On arrival the man at reception said he had no idea what he was doing as he didn't normally cover reception. He also advised that there was only him and one other staff member on site. We had requested a ground floor room as my wife struggles with stairs due to mobility issues. The first room we were given was on the first floor so we asked for a room on the ground floor. The room we were given overlooked the bins, so we asked if they had anything else as the smell was strong. We were quoted an extra £80 for the week for an upgrade to a nicer room, but on checkout that had turned into over £500 extra. The hotel was full of workmen and contractors, which none of the guests had been prewarned about. We even had a contractor telling us it was terrible that we weren't advised of all the building work going on. So if you fancy a ridiculously over charged, underwhelming stay at a country house, then this is the place for you. Remember to take your hard hat

It was okay

Liked: Lovely clean room
Disliked: I rang to double check we could have early check in to the be told check in was 3pm and wasn’t aware we booked it. When given the key for our room we was told a few directions which we got lost, when reported back to reception she finally physically showed us and it was seconds rather than the 10 minutes of us wondering where we was meant to go. The little bit of extra effort could’ve saved us time to not have to rush back to reception for clearer directions.

Misleading ‘view’ room description and...

Liked: Nice large room, lovely grounds
Disliked: I paid for a deluxe double. It clearly stated ‘view’ but looked directly onto a brick wall and fire escape. When I asked about this at reception I was told only some rooms come with a view. I pointed out that all rooms say ‘view’ and so this is misleading customers. The receptionist said she would ‘chase it’ (I was never aware of said chasing happening) and moved on to the invoice which was £10 higher than expected due to a tip they stick on without asking. I paid £110 for room only which already seemed like a lot and therefore encountered no staff apart from to check in and check out which I don’t think requires tipping. Especially £10. I have a work budget to stick to and had to ask for the tip to be removed which was incredibly awkward and unenjoyable. Warn guests beforehand if you’re going to pressure them into tipping. Shame because the hotel itself was gorgeous and if I’d had a view as promised the stay would have been great.
