Excellent in all

Liked: Lovely estate on the estuary and fantastic grounds to walk around
Disliked: Bit noisy with guests banging doors, could do with some way of softening the close but apart from that nothing

Liked: breakfast very good, room was very clean and comfey, as we were on the top floor and due to the hot weather the room was very warm, with limited air flow

Not worth

Liked: Just the area was alright.
Disliked: Our stay was extremely disappointing. The bathroom had no soap or shampoo, and calls to reception went unanswered—we had to go in person just to get soap. Dinner booking attempts were ignored, so we ate elsewhere. Morning tea took over 30 minutes and only came after asking again. For a hotel claiming 5 stars, the service was disorganized and far below expectations.

Not a 5 star experience...

Liked: The bed was comfortable, and we had a good night's sleep. The towels were soft and fluffy. The dinner dining was excellent.
Disliked: Accommodation Experience/Impressions1.On the first night, there was an obnoxious smell of sewage coming from the drain in the ‘wet room’ area. This was possibly some problem with the sewage/septic tank pumping system? Thankfully, the smell abated and did not reoccur.2.There was no inside seating area (although advertised on the website. The only place to sit inside was on the bed. There was no telephone in the room so the information to call reception by dialling 0 was pointless.3. Slippers and bathrobes not in the room as advertised. On inquiring, we were told that they were on request only ( no mention of this on the website or any booking correspondence. They were provided – eventually.4. There were no facial tissues provided. This is a basic, staple provision expected in a hotel claiming a 5-star rating.5.Bottles of sparkling water provided only once and waste/rubbish bins not emptied on a daily basis.6.The room would benefit from a full length mirror and a place for ladies wishing to dry and style their hair, since you cannot use the hair drier in the bathroom area.7.If you wish to use the toilet after showering and dressing, then you have to ‘paddle’ through the wet room section. Breakfast Experience (so called 'Continental')1.On the first morning the milk had run out and a member of staff had gone out to buy some nearby. 2.Just 2 fruit juices (apple or cranberry), no orange or grapefruit juices - These are basics for a 5-star rating.3.Fresh fruit selection – with just slices of melon and a few very overripe plums, a pear and an apple.4.Cheese selection very limited (2 varieties), only a single meat selection, only white bread and plain yoghurt.8.Only side plates were provided at the table. These are too small even for croissant.

A pleasant base in a...

Liked: We booked a deluxe room in the orangery, which was lovely. I liked that we could bring our dog and that they had some treats and a bed ready for him when we came in. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and it was great to be able to roam the trails with the dog. The food at the hotel was good in parts (we really enjoyed our crab starter and the vegetables from the gardens were lovely). All of the staff were very welcoming and clear work very hard but the hotel is a lot to manage.
Disliked: The property is very run down. We were lucky with our room but the other building is noticeably in disrepair. It is more of a B&B than a 4* luxury hotel. The website is a little misleading. The bar and restaurant served nice food but the experience of eating there was a little strange - I think because there was a skeleton crew for staff and the furniture outside needs replacing. A better selection of drinks would be nice and the chicken I had was quite a cheap chicken breast, which had lots of sinew. The continental breakfast was a bit luck of the draw - if you arrived early you would have more choice of pastries etc, but you got the sense that once they were gone, that was it.

Superb

Liked: Well designed and spacious room. Very nice shower facility and bathtub. Pillows are very comfortable. Located in a beautiful and quiet place. Perfect for relaxing.
Disliked: More food or choices for the continental breakfast would be perfect.

Far too many problems to...

Liked: The buildings, and especially the grounds, are amazing. It is so peaceful and uncrowded, walking alongside the river and discovering a little church and a piece of the original yew tree there was really relaxing. The jacuzzi bath was huge and powerful, once we felt able to use it. The view from our room was amazing. It's best described by the photo below.
Disliked: It was a long walk from the car park (and we were in the close disabled spaces, of which there are only 2), and our room was through lots of narrow doors and up a steep narrow staircase. I struggled a bit to carry our bags, and there was no one around to help. I was too embarrassed to ask the reception lady who walked out in front of us to show the way, to carry my bags for me, but i was in the disabled space for a reason. Our room was through a door and down a side corridor, which meant the access to other rooms ran past our door and was pretty noisy at all hours. The thing that annoyed me most was that this was supposed to be a 5-star hotel, yet there were so many small things wrong. Any one of the "glitches" would have been fine, but taken altogether, they spoilt things a bit.We had no glasses in our room to drink from. The spotlight in the ceiling directly above our metal shower head was swinging free on 6 inches of cable. There was no remote for the TV, meaning we had to use the buttons on the underside of the screen to adjust the volume, and switch it off at the wall plug to turn the screen off. The listed bath robes weren't there. We had one tiny bar of soap for our 2 night stay. We had to use the cushions from the sofa underneath our pillows as they were so flat and there were no spares. Finally, the phone was completely dead, meaning I had to go back down the aforementioned stairs, etc, to find someone in reception to report all these problems to.When I spoke to the receptionist she wrote it all down and said maintenance would be right over, housekeeping would also be sent straight up, and my request for 2 champagne glasses was no problem and would I like an ice bucket with them. I said yes please to the ice bucket, and she insisted on a time for it to be delivered, rather than my "anytime soon." I only mention the time because the ice bucket never arrived, making it a bit of a joke that she'd asked me.Char.
