The Spotlight on Seaview Hotel

Scenic Stays & Smooth Sounds in John O'Groats

Modern convenience meets rugged coastal charm at the Seaview Hotel, perched above the Pentland Firth with panoramic views of the Orkney Isles. Just a short walk from the John O’Groats ferry terminal, this family-run hotel offers a cosy, welcoming vibe with thoughtful amenities like free Wi-Fi, complimentary toiletries, and a lounge bar stocked with over 100 malt whiskies.

Why Concert-goers love it

Whether you’re catching a ferry to an island gig or driving to nearby venues in Wick, the Seaview Hotel is in a peaceful location that’s ideal for tuning out after a high-energy show. With flexible 15:00 check-in and early 10:00 check-out, it suits travel days with tight schedules. The quiet setting and private en-suite rooms make it easy to unwind, and free parking means no stress if you're road-tripping to concerts across the Highlands.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a scenic base with a great bar
  • Solo travellers catching a bucket-list show in the North
  • Couples making a romantic weekend of music and sea views
  • Fans needing a quiet recovery space after a loud night
  • Budget-conscious concert-goers who want value and comfort

Food and Drink Options

The hotel’s restaurant serves up local produce with sea views, perfect for a relaxed dinner after the show. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the on-site lounge bar offers hearty drinks into the evening. Breakfast is available and served with a view—ideal for a slow start after a late night.

Nightlife Options

While John O’Groats isn’t a nightlife hotspot, the hotel’s own whisky bar is a hidden gem, offering a low-key place to wind down with a local dram. For more action, you’ll need to head to Wick or nearby towns, which are a short drive away.

What People Say

Guests love the stunning views, the friendly atmosphere, and the cosy rooms. The whisky selection gets frequent mentions, as does the handy location for exploring the north coast or catching the ferry. Many reviewers highlight the peace and quiet as a major plus for a good night’s rest.

Areas for Improvement

The location is remote—great for escaping the crowds, but limited in terms of walkable nightlife or late-night eats. Also, the check-out time of 10:00 might feel early after a concert night, so plan accordingly.

The Bottom Line

If you’re headed to a Highland gig and want sea views, whisky, and a good night’s sleep, the Seaview Hotel is your perfect post-show hideaway.

Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Disappointing

Liked: Not a whole lot, overall.
Disliked: Staff unable/unwilling to accommodate credit card cash advance. We had suffered a flat tire enroute to Dunnet Head and had insufficient cash to pay the extremely kind and helpful recovery folks. We were told just to drive 25 miles to Wick and find an ATM. Room was tiny and bed was small and uncomfortable.

Disappointing

Disliked: The breakfast we booked included only Kelloggs, some cereals, milk, yogurt and juice. Everything additional that would be expected for a breakfast such as eggs, toast and bacon or an English breakfast needs to be payed extra. The waitress did not lose a word about this just put down the menus without further explanation. Would have been nice to be informed about this matter as knowing this we would not have booked breakfast there.

Expensive for what you get

Liked: Easy to find. Spacious room.
Disliked: Room was extremely hot. Sun was shining and curtains were open. Obviously in northern Scotland that might not be a regular occurrence, but we “lucked” out. Bathroom was spacious but toilet was very noisy and privacy film on bathroom windows was discoloured and looked unclean. Side window was missing lever to open. Food was just okay. Breakfast options were not extensive.

See above. Disappointing for the...

Liked: Breakfast was ok. Location was great First room
Disliked: First room we went to had faulty electrical systems. Next room had no sheets on the bed. Tried calling office, no reply. When we sat down for evening meal , had to call on waiter to get any attention. This was after sitting fog 35 minutes, then service was very slow. . Got the impression the place may have been short staffed. Same at breakfast time.
