About 750 euros of unexpected...

Disliked: Having had the chance to travel extensively and stay in some of the world’s finest 5-star hotels, I had high expectations for the Renaissance Porto Lapa. I specifically chose this hotel based on the glowing reviews about the breakfast. Unfortunately, my disappointment matched my expectations.– The Negatives:The first and most concerning issue was with the hotel's payment practices. I was told at check-in that a €250 (50 per night) authorization would be placed on my card to cover incidental expenses. However, throughout the stay, the hotel charged several additional amounts of €170 and €190, adding up to €750 on top of the initial €250 authorization.I only consumed two cocktails, and my breakfast had already been prepaid. When I asked for an explanation, I was told this was to “avoid issues” in case I couldn’t cover future expenses—something I found entirely unjustified. To make matters worse, I was told I would need to check myself in 2–3 days if the refund hadn’t gone through. The lack of sincere apology or accountability was disappointing and unprofessional.The breakfast, which was the main reason I booked this hotel, was another letdown. There were no fresh juices, very limited variety, and most of the hot options were basic and poorly refined (beans, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, etc.). I expected much more from a 5-star property. I ended up going out to have breakfast elsewhere.+ The Positive :The hotel did allow a late check-out for €30, which I appreciated. It was a small gesture that added a bit of flexibility to the stay.
