The Spotlight on Plough Hotel

Affordable and Historic Stay Close to Northampton’s Music Hotspots

Plough Hotel blends historic charm with modern convenience, set in a former 1890s coaching inn. Located on Bridge Street, it's just an 11-minute walk from Northampton town centre and a 10-minute stroll to the Royal & Derngate theatre and other local venues. With a relaxed pub-style atmosphere, it’s a practical and budget-friendly base for music fans.

Why Concert-goers love it

Its central location makes it easy to catch a show and walk back afterward—no pricey taxis needed. Free on-site parking is a big plus for those driving in for the night. While the hotel is close to the action, it still offers a quieter sleep than you'd expect from a town-centre spot. Early check-ins from 14:00 let you settle in before the gig, and while check-out is at 10:30, it's ideal for heading out early and beating traffic.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for affordable, shared stays near nightlife
  • Solo travelers checking off a bucket-list show at the Royal & Derngate
  • Couples making a weekend of concerts and culture
  • Fans needing downtime after a loud night—it's quiet enough to recharge
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who prefer to spend more on tickets than hotels

Food and Drink Options

The on-site bar serves drinks and shows Freeview sports channels—great for a pre-show pint. While there’s no formal restaurant, you’re only a short walk from Northampton's many pubs and eateries. No 24/7 room service, but the central location means grabbing a late-night bite nearby is never an issue.

Nightlife Options

You're minutes from some of Northampton’s best pubs, bars, and live music spots. The hotel’s own bar is a solid start to your night, especially if you're into catching a game before the gig. For craft beer or cocktails, head toward the town centre and explore at your own pace.

What People Say

Guests love the free parking, central location, and friendly staff. Many highlight the value for money, especially for short stays. Reviews often mention how convenient it is for events at the Royal & Derngate and other local venues. WiFi in the bar area is a nice touch for checking set times or ride apps.

Areas for Improvement

Rooms are basic, and some areas could use an update—but for the price, most guests feel it offers good value. WiFi is limited to the bar area, which may be a downside for those who need constant connectivity.

The Bottom Line

If you're catching a show in Northampton and want a convenient, no-frills place to crash, Plough Hotel hits all the right notes for a concert-friendly stay.

Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Danielle, Northampton, visiting The Roadmender Northampton

Very overpriced I think; room was small and smelled of damp as soon as we walked in. The door was not very secure; the bathroom was still a bit dirty and there was black mould in there.

Liked: Breakfast was OK.
Disliked: Very overpriced.

Kind staff

Liked: The staff members were kind and considerate. I'm disabled and walk with a walking stick. One staff member carried my luggage up to the first floor and another was kind about showing me that my room had a bath and shower and enquired if that was ok for me. I love a bath but do sometimes have problems getting in and out of them. This bathroom and bath were wonderful; large and absolutely spacious enough for easy access. I loved the room and the large bed. This was room 3 which I'll ask for next time I'm here. The breakfast was superb. The little fridge was a nice addition.
Disliked: There was some traffic noise but I chose the hotel as it was near the railway station for my return journey to London. I didn't mind it really.
