Why Concert-goers love it

This hotel is centrally located in Thurso, which means you’re never far from local music events or late-night pub sessions with live tunes. The atmosphere is quiet enough for a peaceful sleep after a gig, and the 24-hour front desk means late-night arrivals or post-show check-ins are no problem. With tour desk support, you can even plan your day trips or venue visits with ease.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a Highlands music adventure
  • Solo travelers ticking off a bucket-list show
  • Couples enjoying a relaxed weekend getaway
  • Fans seeking a quieter, cozy place to recharge after a gig
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who want comfort without splurging

Food and Drink Options

The hotel’s restaurant is a highlight, known for its fresh Caithness seafood and locally inspired dishes. The on-site lounge bar serves snacks and drinks – perfect for a post-concert wind-down. While there’s no official 24/7 room service, the staff are friendly and often happy to help late-night guests. Breakfast is available and ideal for those recovering from a big night out.

Nightlife Options

While Thurso isn’t a major nightlife hub, there are local pubs and bars within walking distance offering live music, Highland whisky, and warm company. The hotel bar is a relaxing spot to enjoy a pint and chat with fellow travelers or music fans. For more high-energy nights, nearby venues often host regional bands and intimate gigs.

What People Say

  • Super central, could walk everywhere.”
  • Very friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere.”
  • “Loved the seafood in the restaurant – perfect pre-show dinner.”
  • Clean, quiet rooms – slept great after a busy night.”

Areas for Improvement

Some guests mention that rooms could use a modern refresh, especially the bathrooms. The decor leans traditional, which adds charm for some but may feel dated for others. While there’s no fitness center or spa, most concert-goers are too busy exploring to mind.

The Bottom Line

The Pentland Hotel is a cozy, well-located base for music fans looking to enjoy Thurso's local charm and easy access to live events – all at a great value.

Good memories of this northern...

Liked: Reliable, honest staff who held our camera, left by accident, for 3 days until we returned to pick it up. Great breakfast.
Disliked: A bit noisy on the old floors in the rooms and halls.

Given it was only 1...

Liked: Central and clean
Disliked: No hand soap in en suite, faulty shower door. Breakfast poor had to wait until almost finished breakfast to get glass for juice, marmalade and bread for toast even after asking several times. Tea at breakfast was weak and more like hot water.

Terrible with a capital T

Liked: Nothing
Disliked: We booked a twin room which was cramped so much so one of the beds overhung the doorway into the en suite obstructing access. The double glazed units in the windows had failed obstructing the view. The tv didn’t work. My evening meal which was lasagne had to be sent back to the kitchen as I couldn’t cut it, after waiting 25 minutes for a replacement unfortunately I had to complain again as it had no meat in it. Having refused to pay for it the duty manager appeared and was quite rude saying I had to pay for it as I had eaten most of it! I advised her that was not the case I was actually looking for some meat. We finally came to an agreement over how much I would pay. Breakfast was just as bad, poor quality the staff on duty didn’t bother to speak to us and the duty manager ignored us. Considering a family run hotel with the interests of their guests their priority we were extremely disappointed in the service, quality of the rooms and the restaurant.

Highly recommend. Old world hotel...

Liked: Staff- so helpful. I left an item behind me and they organized postage for me with no fuss !! Bar staff were so helpful and recommended things to us :) Very friendly welcome :) Great location.
Disliked: They did appear to be a little understaffed for breakfast - there was a bus tour staying in the hotel so I think that put them under some pressure - but they were very apologetic and explained this to us.
