The Spotlight on OYO The Townhouse

Chic Georgian Charm in the Heart of Durham

Modern style meets historic character at OYO The Townhouse, a boutique hotel housed in a Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse. Located in Durham’s scenic Old Elvet area, this hotel blends elegant interiors with a relaxed, welcoming vibe. Just a 10-minute stroll from iconic landmarks like Durham Cathedral and the Castle, it’s also close to the River Wear and Durham University Cricket Club—perfect for those who want to explore before or after a show.

Why Concert-goers love it

You’re less than a mile from Durham Rail Station, making it a breeze to hop to and from gigs in Durham or even Newcastle (just 15 minutes by train). The peaceful location means you can unwind after a loud night out, and the hotel’s flexible 3:00 PM check-in lets you arrive in time to freshen up before the evening’s event. The individually themed rooms add a touch of fun and luxury to your music-fueled getaway.

Who this Hotel is great for

Groups of friends will love the quirky room themes and nearby pubs.
Solo travelers chasing their favorite artist can feel safe and stylish.
Couples will appreciate the romantic, boutique vibe for a weekend escape.
Fans wanting a quieter post-concert recovery space will enjoy the peaceful garden rooms.
Budget-conscious music fans get great value in a central location.

Food and Drink Options

While there’s no on-site restaurant, you’re surrounded by walkable cafes, pubs, and eateries—perfect for a post-show bite. Breakfast is available and runs late enough to suit those who danced the night away. Though 24/7 room service isn’t offered, the friendly staff can point you to late-night options nearby.

Nightlife Options

Durham’s riverside pubs and bars are just around the corner, offering everything from craft beer to cozy cocktail lounges. While there’s no live music on-site, the local scene is lively and easily accessible on foot or by quick cab ride.

What People Say

Guests consistently praise the stylish interiors, spacious rooms, and the hotel’s charming character. Many highlight the excellent location—close enough to nightlife and transport, but still peaceful. The garden rooms are especially popular for their quiet, relaxing atmosphere after an energetic night out.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that due to the historic nature of the building, the stairs can be a bit steep—something to keep in mind if you have mobility concerns. Also, parking can be limited, so consider arriving by train if you’re planning to explore the music scene.

The Bottom Line

OYO The Townhouse is a stylish and serene base for concert-goers who want charm, comfort, and easy access to Durham’s vibrant music and cultural scene.

Disliked: WE DIDN'T STAY AT THE TOWNHOUSE! BECAUSE WHEN WE ARRIVED IT WAS ALL LOCKED UP AND THE PROPERTY HAD BEEN REPOSSESSED BY THE LANDLORD! WE WERE LEFT STRANDED IN DURHAM AND BOTH OYO AND BOOKING.COM HAVE BEEN DISGRACEFUL IN REGARDS TO HELPING. WE HAD TO BOOK ANOTHER HOTEL FOR THE NIGHT AND ARE STILL AWAITING A RESPONSE AND REFUND FROM SOMEONE!

Non-existent. Do NOT book.

Liked: We did not get to stay at this property as we found out when we were due to check in the bailiffs were there. No refund yet to be seen.

Poor

Liked: Gracie the receptionist was great, but that was where it ended, the room we stayed in Midas, was very small, stains all over carpet, no hand-wash or shower gel in room, only shampoo, radiator in bathroom dusty and marked, no beer in bar, anything on food menu a lot not available, breakfast awful all microwaved with cheap product with no taste to it. Definately not 5 star, I guess this was when it was first opened needs a lot of TLC, owner seems to be running it down Probably because its up for sale. definately not worth the money they charge for room. It's more like Faulty Towers. Also wallpaper fallen off wall and left on carpet cobwebs everywhere, Gracie did everything, not enough staff on a evening to deal with any food orders, with what food was available, we walked out of bar after waiting so long for dessert which we didn't get, chef didn't wear any appropriate clothing while cooking, complete shambles

Phillip Mon, 14 July 2025

Disappointing

Liked: The location. Staff were friendly, attentive and apologetic
Disliked: The place is tired. Room was far too warm, one window didn't open. TV wouldn't turn off and the signal was terrible. Cleanliness of both room and restaurant was OK, but you could tell things were missed. It has begun to age and needs bringing back to what it once was.
