The Spotlight on OYO The Royal Hotel

Easygoing Comfort Near the Heart of Newcastle's Live Music Scene

Modern convenience meets traditional hospitality at OYO The Royal Hotel, located just off the A1 and within a short drive of the Newcastle/Gateshead Quayside. This no-fuss, budget-conscious hotel is perfectly placed between the Metrocentre and central Newcastle, making it a great base for music fans headed to major venues. With free on-site parking and Wi-Fi in public areas, it’s an easy and affordable choice for concert-goers.

Why Concert-goers love it

With Metro Radio Arena just 2 miles away and St James' Park only a bit further, you’re never far from the action. The hotel’s location also means you can bypass city-center traffic and still be in the thick of it within minutes. After the show, head back to a quieter, more relaxed setting to unwind. Late check-in from 3:00 PM makes it easy to arrive the day of the concert, and free parking is a major bonus if you're road-tripping with friends.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a budget-friendly base with bars on site
  • Solo travelers chasing their favorite artist and needing a reliable stay
  • Couples making a weekend of it with gigs and sightseeing
  • Fans wanting a quieter post-concert recovery space away from the city noise
  • Budget-conscious music fans who want value without sacrificing location

Food and Drink Options

The Royal Hotel has two on-site bars and a restaurant that serves food daily — no need to head far for a bite before or after the concert. While there’s no mention of 24/7 room service, the availability of food on-site adds convenience. For a hearty start after a late night, breakfast is served and there are nearby eateries if you want to venture out.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself doesn’t host live music, the two bars create a casual social vibe. You’re only a 5-minute drive from Newcastle city centre, where pubs, clubs, and live music venues await. Whether you’re up for a post-show pint or an early night, you’ve got options.

What People Say

Guests consistently appreciate the friendly staff and easy access to Newcastle's venues. Many highlight the ample free parking and the convenient location just off the A1. It's often described as a “solid value for money” stay, especially for those attending concerts or football games.

Areas for Improvement

Some reviewers note that the hotel and rooms are a bit dated in decor, and that not all areas have free Wi-Fi. However, for the price and location, most guests feel these are trade-offs worth making.

The Bottom Line

If you're heading to a gig in Newcastle and want a straightforward, budget-friendly stay with parking and pub vibes, OYO The Royal Hotel delivers exactly what you need.

Very poor

Disliked: The place wasn't clean, stains everywhere, dust everywhere my room wasn't as bad as a friend who had to pay for a different hotel and stay elsewhere as her room was beyond pure filthy, mine was basic. Cleanliness was poor but I went and brought some wipes to wipes things down would definitely not recommend again though

Good value, budget hotel, fine...

Liked: Budget hotel, so no frills, but room was clean, bed was comfortable, shower perfectly acceptable, host was pleasant.
Disliked: The hotel does describe itself as a B&B but the second B, as in breakfast, was not provided, which was a little disappointing.

Just don't get room "Gemma"

Liked: A budget cosy clean room... on a busy road, some details could be improved like a black out curtain and a safety hand-grip if you take a shower/bath. Bed comfy enough and plenty of shelves and pillows to choose from. We had a beer in their full-of-character pub. Check out 10.30 is perfect. Parking space can get busy, we're lucky. Rooms have names.
Disliked: Floor creaking everywhere and banging of beer barrels at 7.30am, inner-walls pipes noises. Other banging noises. Then, noises of a compressor..., then some music... and it's on a busy road.
