The Spotlight on OYO The Rowers Hotel

Riverside Comfort with a Nautical Vibe Near Newcastle’s Music Scene

Modern yet charming, OYO The Rowers Hotel blends a warm, nautical-themed atmosphere with traditional oak-panelled interiors. Located in Gateshead, just under a mile from the MetroCentre and close to Newcastle city centre, this hotel offers a peaceful retreat with easy access to concerts, nightlife, and cultural hotspots like the Sage Gateshead and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The sunny conservatory and garden views add a relaxing touch between gigs.

Why Concert-goers love it

The location is a major plus — you're only minutes by car or taxi from major venues on both sides of the River Tyne. While it’s nestled in a quiet area for post-show recovery, it’s close enough to the action that you won’t miss a beat. Free Wi-Fi helps you share concert moments instantly, and the relaxed check-in time from 15:00 makes arrival easy, even if you're coming in late.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends – Cozy shared spaces and walkable eateries nearby make it a great base.
  • Solo travelers – Comfortable and quiet, with great transport links to the city and venues.
  • Couples – Nautical charm and garden views set the mood for a weekend getaway.
  • Fans needing downtime – The conservatory and peaceful location offer a perfect wind-down vibe.
  • Budget-conscious music lovers – Affordable rates without sacrificing comfort or location.

Food and Drink Options

While the hotel doesn’t offer an on-site restaurant, you’ll find plenty of walkable dining spots and late-night takeaways in the area. Tea and coffee facilities in every room are a nice touch for that early morning or post-concert wind down. Breakfast is available nearby if you're not an early riser.

Nightlife Options

You’re a short ride away from Newcastle’s vibrant nightlife, with bars, pubs, and live music venues easily accessible by taxi or public transport. After a show, retreat back to a quieter environment without giving up access to the buzz.

What People Say

Guests consistently praise the welcoming staff, clean rooms, and the hotel’s quirky nautical décor. Many reviews highlight the excellent location for both shopping and gig-going, and the peaceful vibe after a lively night out. The value for money is often mentioned as a big win.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that the hotel is a little dated in places, and the décor may feel quirky rather than modern. The check-out time of 10:30 might feel a bit early after a late night, but the staff are helpful and flexible when possible.

The Bottom Line

OYO The Rowers Hotel is a cozy, affordable choice for concert-goers who want easy access to Newcastle’s venues without sacrificing peace and comfort.

Do not stay here

Liked: The bed was comfortable.
Disliked: Very dark, couldn't see in windows, net curtain was brown and some even blowing out of open windows. There was a hole in the ceiling, old fashioned, bathroom light didn't work, bathroom very unhygienic, there was mould in drawers and the long life milk was even off.

Disappointing

Liked: Staff was pleasant
Disliked: poor reception on arrival, hotel is locked as there is no one stationed to stay at reception throughout the day, so had to wait till one of the guest opened the door as they were heading out, in order for me to enter upon arrival.House keeping was very poor, the room was dusty and the bins contain garbage from the last guest. the teacups and kettle looked liked they weren't cleaned for days, I was just relieved that I had brought my own cup and cutlery to use as I definitely could not use the ones that were provided.the plumbing in the toilet area is very poor as I constantly heard flushing sounds from other rooms above mines and water kept trickling Into the toilet bowl everytime someone used the toilet above mineswhich made my sleep very restless as this is an ongoing sound heard throughout my staythe hotel is very close to the road and situated on a corner hence everytime a large vehicle passed by the hotel, the vibration was felt excessively.

Good value for money, you...

Liked: I liked the way the room was, it gave a cottage, boat vibe.
Disliked: I didn’t like how creaky the floors were as I could hear everyone moving around and the walls must be really thin, as I could hear people next to me very clearly and it kept me awake for a long period of time.
