Staff battling under poor management!...

Liked: Location was good, in the city centre, an easy walk everywhere. Staff were very friendly. A busy and quite noisy pub, but it shut early enough for sleeping.
Disliked: Breakfast was rather poor. One day there was no fresh fruit salad, and the one staff on duty said there wouldn't be any until the next day. Another day "continental breakfast" comprised a few slices of cheese, no ham/salami was offered. Another morning we had to wait some time for more bread and cheese - there was only one member of staff on duty, who was trying to serve 4 tables, make tea and coffee etc. Not a sign of good management. The room had "a sitting area" (in its description), but in reality it wasn't possible to sit there as it was too cramped and the tea/coffee etc had to stay on the desk. There was no space in the room for a chest with any drawers for our clothes, just a small hanging space. Fresh towels were put out each day but the used bath towel (which we shared) wasn't removed on either of the 2 mornings. Providing fresh towels wasn't necessary when we obviously were not using them.

Liked: The main lady, assume the manager was very friendly/helpful and generally great. She looked like she worked extremely hard at her job and it showed. I want it to be clear my review is not a reflection of her or the staff as they were all great. The property standard is the part I have reviewed poorly.The bed linen and bathroom were clean but the rest of the room felt dirty and rundown.
Disliked: Honestly the room didn't resemble what I booked, I appreciate rooms are not always the one in the image but the picture of the booked rooms was clearly taken years ago after renovation. It was an exceptionally hot day & I booked at short notice however when shown to our room the main hallway carpet looked dirty and the hallway & main room were stinky like feet.Had we not driven 4hrs for my brothers wedding I would have complained and not checked in.We opened the windows and had the fan on constantly and the room smelled a little better on our return.The room and communal areas all have such potential but they need money spent on them to bring them up to what booking.com is calling a 4*. The paintwork, skirtings and carpet all looked dirty and chipped. The divan under the bed was dirty/grotty looking, the dressing cushions on the bed smelled dirty so we're immediately throw off the bed & the armchair didn't look clean either.

The bedroom was perfect and...

Liked: A charming traditional inn. I look forward to seeing it when the external decorations are finished.The bar, dining area and courtyard need the same care and attention that has been given to the bedrooms.
Disliked: 1) the courtyard furniture 2) the menu, I am a coeliac and it was no good for me

Liked: Great central location, easy walk from the train station, staff were very friendly when showing us to our room and when dealing with a payment issue
Disliked: Very noisy, room was above a pub garden and was noisy if the window was open but the room did not have any air con so the window had to be open. Was actually okay, but we had a 5am wake up so was not ideal for us.
