Hotel Description
England's oldest hotel (from 1220) in England's first capital offers quintessentially English service and hospitality. Experience levels of service that you would find hard to better anywhere in England. The highly rated Old Bell reputed to be England's oldest purpose-built hotel is adjacent to the famous Abbey in the historic town of Malmesbury on the edge of the Cotswolds 5 miles from Junction 17 of the M4 motorway and near Chippenham. The Old Bell is steeped in character with log fires paintings stone-walls and period furniture. The bedrooms are individually furnished: those in the main house are more period in character some with beams and fireplaces; those in the Coach House have a light and airy feel to them.

Disliked: I felt our room was small for the price in comparison to our friends who paid the same but their room was a lot bigger

Plush, relaxing and very comfortable.

Liked: Service from reception, bar staff and restaurant staff was all excellent, polite, helpful and smiley!Delicious meal in the evening and breakfasts were delightful.Good bar snacks and cocktails. Loved the decor and the individual quirky seating areas indoors.
Disliked: The pillows could be improved on, all rather squidgy. The noise from the shower pipes was rather intense!Maybe the outdoor seating space could be refreshed slightly, not quite up to the interior standards.

Family Trip - Two Nights...

Liked: The hotel is full of character and ideally located in a charming village. We enjoyed a lovely dinner together as a family — the food and atmosphere were excellent. A special mention to Robbie, who was on duty at night: he went out of his way to assist us, bringing extra towels and tea around midnight on our first night, and personally offering to look after our cars. His kindness and professionalism stood out and were genuinely reassuring.
Disliked: The rest of the experience fell short, especially considering the expectations set in advance. Despite reserving two car park spaces months earlier, none were available when we arrived. Our three rooms, booked together for a family weekend, were scattered across the hotel — a frustrating surprise.Worse, the master bedroom was clearly set up for a single guest — just one towel, one pair of slippers, and so on — even though booked for two. When we raised this, the staff were largely indifferent, with an unhelpful “it is what it is” attitude. This was especially disappointing given that the hotel had proactively called me multiple times before our stay to confirm all details — dinner, rooms, parking. We truly believed everything had been carefully prepared. Instead, it felt like the hotel’s priorities were more about its own logistics than creating a thoughtful experience for guests.
