WARNING: misleading pet charges
Liked: Standard midwestern hotel needing a remodel. Pros: ample parking, nice cleaning staff, spacious breakfast room.
Disliked: Cons: rooms smell musty, breakfast is unhealthy and gross—only the yoghurt was edible, AC turns on every 5 minutes whether cooling or not, shower stall (no bathtub) needs a facelift like the rest of the hotel…but the worst part is the misleading pet policy. They charge $35 if you bring a pet, which is expensive, but fairly standard. That’s fine. What’s not fine is charging $35 extra for a pet-friendly room on Booking and then insisting on charging another $35 fee when you get there. I naturally refused, as any reasonable person would assume that paying $35 extra to book a pet-friendly room would be the end of the pet charges, not the beginning. Hotel should do like all others and charge the same for rooms that are exactly the same and then state clearly on the booking page that bringing a pet costs $35 upon arrival. After a 10-hr drive, I had to argue this point with the front desk for about 45-60 minutes, even waiting on hold for Booking.com’s customer service, who agreed that the listing was misleading. The front desk agreed to cancel my reservation, upon which I booked a room via another website and paid the hotel the $35, in the end costing me exactly what I argued I should pay (plus the hour lost while my family and pet waited for this to be resolved). Will not return for another Kafka-esque experience. Also not thrilled with the insistence that the hotel must “inspect” your room before you check out or else pay an extra night.
