The Spotlight on Northwest Portland Hostel

Affordable, social, and right near the action in Northwest Portland

Northwest Portland Hostel blends cozy charm with a vibrant, community-driven vibe in one of Portland’s most walkable neighborhoods. Housed in a series of historic buildings, this 3-star hostel offers a budget-friendly base with a garden, shared kitchen, evening entertainment, and even a BBQ area. With air-conditioned rooms, free WiFi, and a welcoming lounge and terrace, it's a laid-back spot just a few minutes from popular concert venues, downtown Portland, and the arts district.

Why Concert-goers love it

If you're heading to a show, this hostel puts you close to key venues like the Roseland Theater and Crystal Ballroom—both within easy walking distance or a quick bus ride away. The vibe here is friendly but not rowdy, perfect if you want a social base without the late-night noise. Late check-out at 12:00 gives you time to sleep off the encore, and public transit is just around the corner for those catching late-night sets or heading out to explore Portland post-show.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends traveling together on a budget
  • Solo travelers checking off bucket-list concerts
  • Couples making a weekend of a gig
  • Fans looking for a quiet, affordable place to recharge
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who want to stay social

Food and Drink Options

The on-site café and restaurant offer casual meals, and the shared kitchen is perfect for late-night snacking after a show. While there’s no 24/7 room service, you’re steps away from NW 21st Ave and NW 23rd Ave, where you’ll find plenty of eateries and bars open late. Breakfast is available, so you can fuel up the morning after a big night.

Nightlife Options

You’re in Portland’s buzzing Alphabet District, which means bars, pubs, and lounges are just a short stroll away. While the hostel itself doesn’t host live music, it often has evening entertainment like trivia or open mic nights, creating a fun, social atmosphere to meet fellow music fans.

What People Say

Guests rave about the location—close to concert venues, restaurants, and public transport. The hostel’s clean, cozy rooms and friendly staff get consistent praise, and many travelers love the social vibe without the noise of a party hostel. The garden courtyard and communal spaces are also favorites for pre- or post-show hangouts.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that the shared bathrooms can get busy during peak hours, and parking is limited—though public transit makes it easy to go car-free. It's a hostel, so expect more of a minimalist stay than luxury touches.

The Bottom Line

Northwest Portland Hostel is a top pick for concert-goers who want an affordable, friendly, and well-located spot to crash after the show.

A restful break in my...

Liked: Excellent cafe with great menu. Two options for dining outside, comfortable dining room and spacious “commons” with generous seating options including places to charge and use electronic devices. Awesome entertainment options throughout the week both in the hostel and locations nearby, which offer discounts for hostel residents.Facilities, staff and location make this my go-to whenever I visit Portland!
Disliked: There’s limited parking on the street but a car is actually a hassle in the city of Portland in general. The city has excellent public transit including the MAX system, many dozens of bus lines, a cool electric streetcar line and even an aerial tram!!

Exceptional

Liked: The place was really quirky and cool but at the same time very clean and well maintained. The network of old, repurposed townhouses and the in-between spaces have a unique atmosphere. The place is run very well too, it's clearly all well-thought out and the customer service is fantastic.

Mediocre hostel with good location

Liked: Facility was clean, not noisy. Always spaces to sit in lounges and garden, never had a problem finding a spot to shower. Beds had a power strip and a light, which was convenient. The location is excellent and very walkable to many things plus near a lot of public transit options including the train and the light rail that goes to the airport.
Disliked: It was a perfectly mediocre hostel but I've stayed in a lot better, and can't believe it's the #3 medium-sized hostel in the world (stayed in the #1 at one point, and many others...). Beds were squeaky, squeaked every time anyone moved. Beds did not have a curtain though had a curtain rod, not sure why they skimped here. Most people used their sheet as a curtain. Bathrooms were tight, like I could barely enter the toilet and close the door. It didn't feel social; I was there for three days and there were zero activities (there was supposed to be a walking tour, but it didn't seem like they told anyone about it so not enough people signed up). I also tried to go to trivia but there didn't seem to be hostel teams. Bar seems more community-oriented than a place for hostel people at this point (see: kids' musician). Breakfast is now $3 off any item at the cafe rather than any free items (before I guess you could get a bagel and coffee for free), and given it's all pretty expensive you're way better off going to the grocery store a couple blocks away. If you have issues with stairs that may be a problem for this hostel as I believe all the dorms require going up steep stairs. Most of these issues could be easily solved, especially for the amount they charge per night.

Pretty clean. Comfortable. Affordable. Easy...

Liked: Location. Attached cafe and it actually had good, high quality food and was vegan friendly. Plus the hours were helpful.
Disliked: Male was found in female bathroom twice. Would love a pet friendly option! Homeless shelter right across the street.
