Muthu Westcliff Hotel (Near London Southend Airport) Guest Reviews

With its grand Victorian charm and clifftop location overlooking the Thames Estuary, the Muthu Westcliff Hotel (Near London Southend Airport) offers a peaceful yet convenient base for concert-goers. Just a short walk from Southend’s buzzing music venues and attractions, this boutique-style hotel combines traditional English elegance with modern comforts. Many rooms offer sweeping estuary views, and the classic décor gives it a relaxed, timeless vibe.
Music fans appreciate the location—just a 5-minute walk to the Cliff Pavilion, one of Southend's top concert venues. After the show, stroll back along the seafront to your room with no need for taxis or late-night transport. The hotel’s quiet clifftop setting means you can enjoy a restful night’s sleep post-gig, away from the late-night street noise. With check-in from 15:00 and check-out at 11:00, there’s time to rest and recover.
The onsite brasserie restaurant serves international cuisine, ideal for pre-show dinners. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the hotel offers afternoon tea and a seasonal patio space for relaxed dining. Plenty of local eateries and pubs are within walking distance, and there’s breakfast available the next morning—perfect after a late night out.
The hotel itself is more about quiet charm than late-night partying, but you're just a short walk from Southend’s bars and pubs by the seafront. Whether you're after a celebratory drink post-concert or a chilled pint with a view, the location gives you options without the chaos of a city center.
While the building’s Victorian charm is part of the appeal, some guests mention that certain rooms could use a refresh. There’s also no lift, so pack light or request a lower floor if stairs are an issue. Limited parking can be a challenge during busy weekends.
The Muthu Westcliff Hotel is a charming and convenient base for concert-goers—close enough to walk to the show, but far enough to relax after the encore.

Liked: Friendly and helpful staff.

My room was very clean and large. It had lots of mirrors and a desk to sit at - both features were very helpful. It had a large window overlooking the sea which I loved and all the drink making and washing extras that one expects. As a single woman I felt very safe and I will be staying there again in October.
Liked: It was well presented and spacious.
Disliked: The restaurant was quite expensive.

Would have been a great stay but for a disco until the early hours. We were moved to a sea front room which was quiet. Staff did apologise - would use again though.
Liked: Rooms comfy; food excellent.
Disliked: Disco going on until the early hours - very loud.

Brilliant - we had a lovely stay. All the staff were really friendly, very smart and efficient. The food and service in the restaurant and bar was second to none. Our room was fresh and extremely clean. Breakfast was spot on with a good selection to suit most tastes. Value for money was very good. Already recommended it to friends and we are looking for a reason to stay again.

The lovely Muttu in Westcliff
Liked: Great location. Very competent staff. Special mention for Keiron, Bob, Inna,Julia, Artemijs, Eve. Excellent view of estuary, . Hotel is very charismatic and charming with a fine history.
Disliked: With the Muttu it all depends what room you get. Some rooms have been renovated, some not. First I had a good small room on 2nd floor and was fine. Then I had a larger "superior" room on 4th floor where it took 10-15 mins of spluttering old plumbing to achieve hot water, and the bathroom itself was always cold.

Great location, lovely staff, excellent...
Liked: Location was excellent for the theatre, shops, beach and pier. Lovely friendly staff, great views and food
Disliked: Bathroom was a bit dated in our twin room and TV needs updating, despite that it was very comfortable and amazing view. It does look like the hotel is in process of a refurbishment and overall it was really lovely

Clean
Liked: Location and parking are good. Short distance from central Southend.
Disliked: Hotel is tired. Water leaks in reception roof. Antiquated lift. Owner needs to remove his photo from reception as it makes everything look like an over priced ego trip

I’d only stay here again...
Liked: Convenient for the station
Disliked: Needs a lot of TLC. Decor is dated and tired. Shower very small and old. A one-inch gap at the bottom of the bedroom door which let light in all night until I had to lay a towel down. Phone in the room didn’t work and when I used my mobile to call reception I only ever got an answerphone which said it did not take messages.

Good value and friendly staff
Liked: Clean good sized room, staff very friendly and helpful - bar area good
Disliked: Could not make the lift work and it was super tiny ended up walking up the stairs instead.
