Not worth the price
Liked: The main areas were pretty.
Disliked: You have to pay for the breakfast but the buffet is not worth the money. I've had better at smittys. The rooms are dated, only 2 small pillows for a king bed, no microwave. Have to pay $30 a night for parking which is ridiculous. None of it is worth the exorbitant amount of money they're charging.

Disappointing.
Liked: The location remains a good jumping off point for downtown Edmonton Work. For the most part the hotel is clean.
Disliked: The hotel was loud. One night, a party raged next to us until 4:30 in the morning. Despite many phone calls to the front desk, the party continued. It wasn't until we got out of bed, and went down to the lobby to complain that the hotel finally took action. The next night, starting around 5 am, a dog was barking (its head off), keeping us awake until morning. We called the desk 3 times trying to get action, but nobody answered. When I raised this issue with the manager the following morning, I was told, "We're a pet-friendly hotel." I suppose they are not a guest-friendly hotel anymore. Often, hoteliers can't control what happens in their rooms, but they can control how they address these challenges with their guests. In this case, it was very poor. In general, I was very disappointed with the hotel. I have stayed at the Matrix 25-30 times over the last decade while doing work in the city. It was always a quiet, comfortable venue. The lounge's transformation into a cafeteria-feeling room is particularly disappointing. The sheets had holes in them, the building felt tired and run down despite recent renovations. I have recommended the Matrix to dozens of people over the years, and I won't do that any longer. This was likely my last stay in a formally favourite hotel; I'll be looking for new digs for my work in YEG.
