The Spotlight on Marmalade

Historic Charm Meets Scenic Vibes in Portree

Modern comfort blends with period charm at Marmalade, a beautifully restored 1817 Grade B listed building in Portree on the Isle of Skye. With sweeping views of Portree Bay and the Cuillin Hills, this stylish boutique hotel is a peaceful yet central base for exploring local music events and island nightlife.
Rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed, with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, tea and coffee facilities, and en-suite bathrooms. The landscaped gardens and intimate heated courtyard make it easy to relax before or after a concert.

Why Concert-goers love it

While Portree isn’t a bustling concert capital, Marmalade’s location is ideal for fans attending local gigs or festivals around Skye. It’s just a short walk to Portree Harbour, where many boat and distillery tours depart—perfect for daytime exploring before a show. The hotel offers free private parking and is tucked away enough to provide a quiet retreat after the music ends. The flexible 3:30 PM check-in and 11 AM check-out times mean you can relax without rushing your travel schedule.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a scenic, shared adventure
  • Solo travelers catching live music or festivals on Skye
  • Couples seeking a romantic weekend with a musical twist
  • Fans wanting a quieter post-concert recovery space with mountain views
  • Budget-conscious music fans who want value without sacrificing comfort

Food and Drink Options

The hotel’s daily breakfast includes a buffet-style continental and a hearty Full Scottish option—ideal for late risers after a night out. While there’s no mention of 24/7 room service, the bar opens into a heated courtyard for a late-night drink or informal bite. Plus, Portree’s cozy pubs and restaurants are just a short stroll away for dinner before the show.

Nightlife Options

While there’s no on-site live music, the hotel’s intimate bar and courtyard are perfect for pre-show drinks or winding down with a local whisky. Portree’s harbor pubs often host folk music nights and are easily walkable, offering a taste of Skye’s vibrant local scene.

What People Say

Guests consistently rave about the stunning views, peaceful atmosphere, and friendly staff. The central yet quiet location makes it a favorite for those who want to explore Skye’s beauty by day and enjoy low-key nightlife by evening. Reviews also highlight the comfortable beds and delicious breakfast as standout features.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests noted that the Wi-Fi can be a bit patchy in certain rooms—though that’s part of the charm when you’re unplugging in the Highlands. Also, while there’s no on-site restaurant for dinner, options in Portree are close by and well worth the walk.

The Bottom Line

For music lovers seeking scenic vibes, comfort, and a peaceful place to recharge, Marmalade in Portree is a memorable home base on the Isle of Skye.

Way overpriced for what you...

Liked: Upon check in, the individuals at the front desk were incredibly kind and helpful! We had a fun time talking and interacting with them. They offered a great experience! The room was small but clean and had a nice view. The shower was a struggle with water pressure and warm water.
Disliked: I would definitely avoid eating at any of the restaurants at this location. We had dinner reservations at Dulse & Brose and it was not a good experience for food or service! The breakfast at the hotel in the morning was equal to our dinner for food and service. On a different note, we stayed in the Oban Perle hotel which is under this same owner and had a wonderful breakfast experience for food and service!

I am sorry to say...

Liked: Location , the room is facing greenery and room is tastefully done
Disliked: 1) first night, there was sudden false fire alarm, which disturbed our sleep, and the stuff did not explain or give some gesture at breakfast.. I think for such an high end hotel, they can do better2) the shower water is not hot, it seems that first person use , the water is hot; bust for second person to use, the water temperature can be increased ; for such expensive hotel, I would expect to have good shower experience3) at breakfast, the waitress gave us a menu but inside is empty

Liked: Good location, nice rooms, good restaurant experience for dinner/first mornings breakfast
Disliked: Borderline rudeness of the woman who checked us in, no elevators, nobody to help with bags, rooms were not cleaned (not even a towel and water refresh), bad second morning breakfast experience. This is not a cheap hotel. For £450 per night, I do not think it is unreasonable to expect help with your bags or to have your room cleaned without having to specially request.

ZERO STAFF PRESENT - DONT...

Liked: Excellent breakfast, nice facilities
Disliked: Staff was non existent. After waiting 15 minutes for a table, one staff member appeared at breakfast on Easter morning and apologized several times stating that they were short staffed. We had two superior double rooms, both at the same price. One was very noticeably smaller with no view. I repeatedly called the front desk throughout the day to make reservations for dinner and to address several issues in our room and received no answer. No one was ever there. I then emailed the front desk and never received a response. When we went to check out, no one was at the desk. I finally found Willie at the desk our last night there and let him know that our internet, tv nor hair dryer worked in our room. He assured me that he would send someone up to fix it. Went back to my room. No one ever came. Went back to the front desk and Willie was not there. Found him in the lounge drinking with other guests. Was once again told that he would come up and fix the issues. Never did. This is completely unacceptable to pay $550 a night for a room that only has plug ins on one side of the bed, no mini fridge, extremely poor lighting in the bathroom, poor water pressure, took shower ten minutes each time for the water to get hot, no working tv or hair dryer and restaurant being closed at night due to staffing issues. This has the potential to be a nice accommodation albeit not for $550 a night. It’s appalling to email, repeatedly call and then go in person to the only staff member you can find only to have your issues completely ignored while they drink in the lounge. Let me add that I did call the front desk while in view of the desk only to see Willie watching videos on his phone and ignoring the ringing phone.
