The Spotlight on Madame Isabelle's House

Quirky, Cozy, and Steps from the French Quarter Beat

Madame Isabelle's House is a charming, character-filled hostel tucked into a historic building in the heart of New Orleans. Just a short walk from the edge of the French Quarter, this laid-back spot blends vintage vibes with social backpacker energy. With shared and private room options, free WiFi, and a welcoming atmosphere, it's an ideal home base for music lovers who want to stay close to the action without blowing their budget.

Why Concert-goers love it

Located less than a mile from major local landmarks like St. Louis Cathedral and St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, Madame Isabelle's puts you within easy walking distance of many of New Orleans' most iconic venues. The hostel's location on a quieter residential street means you can still get a good night's sleep after a high-energy show. With flexible common areas and a shared kitchen, it's easy to wind down or meet fellow music fans. Late-night rideshare access is excellent, making it easy to get back from a show.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a social, budget-friendly base
  • Solo travelers chasing a memorable live set or festival
  • Couples making a romantic weekend of it
  • Fans who want a quiet place to chill after a gig
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who want easy access to venues

Food and Drink Options

While there’s no restaurant on-site, the fully stocked shared kitchen gives you the freedom to whip up a late-night snack. You're also just blocks from countless eateries in the French Quarter, from 24/7 diners to upscale Creole cuisine. Breakfast isn't provided, but coffee and tea are usually available in the kitchen for a casual start to your day.

Nightlife Options

You're steps away from the buzzing nightlife scene of Frenchmen Street and Bourbon Street, where live jazz, blues, and funk spill out of every doorway. Prefer to keep it low-key? The hostel’s cozy courtyard is a great place to share a drink and stories with fellow travelers before or after a show.

What People Say

Guests love the friendly, social vibe without it feeling like a party hostel. Many highlight the excellent location, clean facilities, and the charm of the old building. The staff receives praise for being welcoming and helpful, especially with local recommendations. Travelers also appreciate the value for money and the opportunity to meet like-minded adventurers.

Areas for Improvement

Because it’s a hostel, private rooms and bathrooms are limited, so it’s best to book early if you want more privacy. Some guests note that the stairs can be a bit steep and the building has that classic New Orleans creaky-floorboard vibe—but that’s part of the charm!

The Bottom Line

If you're looking for a budget-friendly, social stay close to New Orleans' best music venues, Madame Isabelle's House hits all the right notes.

One of the best hostels...

Liked: Fantastic place. Charming old house with staff who really make an effort to provide things for guests, get them involved in activities, and help them to enjoy the city. One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in.

Get rid of smoking weed...

Liked: The location was good. The free food was a great gesture, but it wasn't good. Boiled eggs, and cold wrapped ham and bread. Yuck! The dinners were sketchy, I didn't eat them. But like i said a good gesture.
Disliked: I am a smoker, but i didn't like that the grounds were not smoke free. Trying to sit out in the back the staff were ALWAYS smoking weed or cigarettes, it made it hard to even want to be outside on the property. The smell is horrible. Walking into the building is the same thing, someone is always smoking as you're walking in, yuck. If your property was smoke free it would be a better place. The bed I slept on was harder than the ground. Super uncomfortable, one night i slept outside in the little shack they have due to the uncomfortable bed. (The outside furniture was more comfortable)I was told i could use the staff bathroom when i checked in but one night when i did i was yelled at by female staff as i was showering. Super rude!

Friendly folks and a safe,...

Liked: For a hostel, it was on the good side. Secure with a great location and loanable umbrellas. Beds were about what you expect and there was a haunted toilet which was kind of weird and fit the vibe. The other bathrooms were all good though.
Disliked: Not a huge fan when the upper bunks have no space on the ground nearby to get yourself sorted. Had to store my bag in a closet on the far side of the room that blocked the door when I needed access to it.

We would stay here again.

Liked: The place was clean, well positioned in the city, and a good deal. The staff was very friendly and the whole place had a very nice vibe to it. We didn't use the common areas much, but they were well appointed.

I had a jamabalast here!

Liked: This is in a nice quite spot only moments away from the French Quarter. The free breakfast is wonderful and has some for everyone, I am vegan so had peanut butter and jam bagels every morning with coffee! They also provide free food throughout the week, make sure you're there on a Wednesday for the jambalaya! Even if you aren't definitely take a picture of the recipe on the side of the fridge. The mixed shared room was clean and comfortable. Although there is one toilet and shower shared between (10?) people from two rooms, I never had to wait long or at all to use it. The staff and other travellers were all so incredibly friendly. This place is perfect.
Disliked: Getting my hostel rental bike stolen. Not an issue with the hostel, but do be weary while you are out an about in New Orleans. GET INSURANCE!
