Knights Inn Grand Rapids East

This hotel is the nastiest place I have ever stayed. The walls are covered in stains. Air conditioning was loud. Police officers are walking the halls all night. I have never felt so unsafe.

This room was unsafe—physically, chemically, and possibly legally. And the fact that it’s still listed on Booking.com without any disclosure of what I endured is unacceptable.From the moment I stepped inside, I was hit with a wall of chemical fumes so intense they made my eyes burn immediately. This wasn’t just a freshly cleaned room. This was a room that had been doused—saturated—with what smelled like industrial-grade bleach. I couldn’t breathe. I had to prop the door wide open for over an hour (I timed it—67 minutes) just to make the air tolerable enough to sit down. Even after that, the fumes clung to my clothes, my hair, and my skin. I physically reeked of whatever they used.The floor told its own story. There were clear, wide mop streaks in a pattern that made it look like something serious had happened in that room the night before. You don’t mop like that for dust. You mop like that when you’re scrubbing evidence. And even with all that effort, there were still visible yellow stains on the floor—multiple wet spots that didn’t dry the entire time I was there.Desperate to get the smell off me, I tried to shower. The water smelled like wet corn silk—musty and organic in the worst possible way. The drain was partially clogged. The walls and floor of the shower were littered with long strands of hair, some stuck to the corners, others embedded in the grout. I stopped counting after the eighth one.And here’s where Booking.com needs to pay close attention: nowhere on the listing did it say anything about a $25 deposit. Not in the price breakdown, not in the fine print, not in the policies. When I checked in, I was required to hand over an extra $25. I received no paperwork at check-in for that nine when I checked out. No receipt, no inspection, no documentation that the refund would be processed.

Liked: This place is dirty and gross. Expectations weren't high, but this was pretty bad. I've never had to air out a motel room I was simply going to crash in for a few hours after a concert. The smell was nasty. Mattresses are probably close to 100 years old. I wouldn't stay here again.
