“The Hyatt Regency JFK: A...
Liked: When I booked a stay at the Hyatt Regency JFK, I was comforted by two things: the brand name Hyatt, and the words JFK Airport right there in the title. It practically whispered sweet nothings of convenience: “Welcome weary traveler, we’re just steps away from your terminal. A hot shower and a warm bed await!”Narrator: It was not, in fact, steps away. Nor did it await.I landed at JFK in the kind of foggy daze that only air travel can deliver, and like any rational person, followed signs to the hotel shuttle area. After standing in the cold for 20 minutes — a human popsicle with carry-on luggage — I realized something was wrong. My phone, as dead as my optimism, had to be resuscitated just so I could look up directions.Surprise: the hotel shuttle doesn’t come to the airport. You’re meant to get to Jamaica Station first. Because that’s what you do when you book an airport hotel — you travel away from the airport.Fine. Back onto the AirTrain I went. To exit at Jamaica? That’ll be $8.50, thank you. That’s right — my romantic evening at the Hyatt Regency JFK now featured a cover charge. At Jamaica, I went looking for the hotel shuttle, now mythologized in my mind like a rare bird: beautiful, elusive, and not real. After pacing around like a lost extra from The Terminal and seeing no sign of a shuttle, I gave up and ordered a $30 Uber. Because what better way to complete an “airport hotel transfer” than with a taxi from a train station? When I arrived, the hotel’s front entrance had been dramatically blocked off with airport-style barricades — because nothing says welcome like being waved around by a guy who clearly missed his calling as a traffic cop at LaGuardia. I circled the building and eventually stumbled into the lobby, half expecting to be greeted with, “Did you survive the maze?”Instead, I met the front desk agent, who appeared shocked that someone might attempt to check in at a hotel.
