Hotel Valencia Riverwalk

We stayed here in February 2010 for a weekend. We had tickets to a show at the Majestic Theater and chose the Valencia because it is only a block down Houston. We got the Theater lovers' package, which included dinner at Citrus. (Reservations were still required at Citrus, even though we had booked the package, FYI.) Only complaint about Citrus was that the tables are way too close to each other. We sat near a table of four and it felt like we were all at the same table. Not conducive to intimacy. Hotel itself is beautiful. Yes, it is dark, but that is the atmosphere they are going for. I don't recommend this hotel for kids, although we saw some kids staying there. The bed was nice and comfy, the bathroom nicely appointed and everything was immaculately clean. We used the valet parking, which is free if you eat in Citrus. Very prompt when we called for our car. The hotel is on the "deserted" end of the San Antonio Riverwalk, meaning, very quiet. If you want more excitement, or to be closer to the fun on the RW, then stay elsewhere. But for quiet, the Valencia is the place to stay. It's a little more expensive than some other locations, but well worth it.

Comfortable but could be improved.

Liked: Good location to Riverwalk and for car access.
Disliked: When we arrived there were a couple of black hairs in the bath tub and on a throw pillow. Staff apologized and had it cleaned. Also, we had a city view room and it was very noisy up until about 11 because a concert venue is nearby. Valet parking was a little expensive at $55 + tax US.

Disliked: We visited pre-Covid and loved this hotel. It has a very boutique feel and smells amazing due to their signature scented candles always lit through the lobby area. At the time of our first stay, little details like light snacks and cucumber water in the lobby were available and appreciated. The hotel felt luxurious.This time, post Covid, it was decidedly less so. The same great smell is there but that's about it. We were on the 12th floor and during our stay, a missing ceiling tile in the hall just outside our room with a water leak was never fixed. A bucket under a ladder with a rope made of towels hung down from it for all 3 days. The room on the 12th floor was pretty warm despite the A/C being turned down to the lowest setting. Had to request a fan 3 times before it was sent up. The room had a stocked fridge and snacks available for extra charges but we didn't use any. The fridge doesn't allow any personal items. This time we noticed the beds were extremely firm, the headboards are scratched up and the quality of the toilet paper is poor. I expected more for the price point. All staff we encountered were very nice and professional - one aside, we did have a gentleman approach us who was not employed by the hotel just outside our room and insisted he needed access to our room for 10 seconds to access the internet. We allowed him in without shutting our door and he did something on a tablet that true to his word, took about 10 seconds. A heads up from the front desk would have been appreciated.

Liked: The location is near the river walk where we wanted to visit.
Disliked: There's a lot of hidden fees. Other charges were not shown at the mobile app. Why should a tourist shoulder taxes from city. It should have been shouldered by the business itself. We were scammed by the room price. We are not using this hotel again.
