Nice location. Dated hotel in...

Liked: The location and gardens are excellent and very near the coastal path for walking etc. The staff were very friendly and polite.
Disliked: The hotel appears dated and tired looking, although apparently it has had a refurb. The dinner menu was the same every night as was the breakfast. The steak i oredered appeared to be a cheap cut and on one occassion had to be sent back as unable to cut it even with a steak knife. Vegetables etc was an extra charge. We had to pay extra for our dog to stay, £25 per night. Although they advertise a dog Washing station, we went to wash the dog, only to find a wooden shed which was in a state of disrepair with a tap outside which was not functional. The bar is painted dark red including the ceiling and is very datk and dingy. The table lamps did not work and it lacks any atmosphere. You were lucky if you could find anyone working behind the bar to serve you. The staff ( or lack of them ) were very friendly and helpful, although they appeared to have to be multi functional. Plates, glasses etc were left in communal areas on tables for hours on end and not being cleared up. The garden furniture is need of some TLC. Some of the umbrellas were broken and had to be tied up with the cord. Personally, i feel that this establishment needs a lot more money spending on it and certainly needs more staff. I appreciate times are hard at present, but providing a standard of service matching the prices they charge is a bisic requirement.Having said all this we did enjoy our stay. However, until such times as the issues i have raised are addressed, im afraid we will not return and would not recommend it to any family or friends. I feel my review is an honest and balanced one on the experience we had. The staff that areworking here are overworked but remain in good spirits. They are a credit to the hotel.

Peaceful and beautiful—held by nature,...

Liked: Breakfast was delicious, with a clear and straightforward offering—including vegetarian and vegan options, which I appreciated even though I’m not strictly either. The coffee was exceptionally good—truly one of the highlights of my mornings. The breakfast timing system (selecting a time upon check-in) felt a little unfamiliar at first, but I came to understand and value the thought behind it—it allowed for a more peaceful dining atmosphere rather than a crowded canteen feel.Dinner was also very well done—the food was high quality and full of flavour. I particularly enjoyed the forest mushroom gnocchi (I ordered it twice!) and the soup, which I believe was leek or artichoke—both absolutely lovely. It did feel slightly unusual at first to be encouraged to book dinner in advance as a hotel guest, but I was still warmly welcomed even when arriving without a reservation. The only thing to note is that the dinner menu stays the same throughout the week, which can become a bit limiting during longer stays—though I know this is quite common in many hotels. And the beach… a true gem. The walk down through the lush, layered woodland felt like entering another world—peaceful, grounding, and deeply beautiful. The beach itself is secluded and serene, offering the perfect space to pause, breathe, and truly drop in. It was one of the most special parts of my stay.
Disliked: One thing I would have personally appreciated is the option of raw greens—such as lettuce, cucumber, or tomato—either in the breakfast buffet or as a simple side option. I understand it’s a personal preference, but some fresh greens in the morning would have been a lovely addition, especially given the beautiful natural surroundings and the likelihood of locally grown produce.Another detail that stood out for me was the lack of support around dinner on my arrival night. I had informed the hotel in advance about my delayed train, and I arrived and checked in later than expected. It would have made a real difference if someone had kindly mentioned at check-in that the restaurant was about to close, in case I hadn’t had a meal—which I hadn’t. Unfortunately, I only found out after going up to my room and settling in, at which point there was no room service available and no option for even a small snack. The in-room fridge was also empty, unlike in many hotels that offer stocked minibars for purchase. Having a small bite or simply being informed would have felt far more supportive after a long and tiring journey.I also would have loved to know whether breakfast could be taken in-room. This wasn’t mentioned at check-in or in the welcome information, so I assume it’s not an option—but if it is, it would be wonderful to make that clearer. Finally, while I appreciated the Cornish tea and instant coffee provided in the room, it would have been lovely to also find a green or herbal tea—especially something locally sourced, considering how abundant herbal offerings are in Cornwall. These are small details, but they do make a meaningful difference in the guest experience.

Highly recommended

Liked: A la carte Breakfeast (included), Dinner was also a 3 course menu with options to choose from. Gluten free friendly, staff very helpful and kind. The hotel has a lovely path to go directly to the beach, which is very calm and quiet. Bedroom very comfortable, great shower and great bed.
Disliked: As it's an old and typical building it's full of carpets. They're very clean but I personally don't like carpets anywhere.
