Budget value room in a...
Liked: The public areas and the building itself were beautiful and had a real old school, luxe feel. I received a really positive welcome from reception and my introduction to the facilities were great. The main entrance way is impressive with the open stairway and chandelier and you can imagine the building in it's prime being quite spectacular. My room 227 had a bath and over bath shower bath with really hot water and powerful water pressure meaning the tub filled in minutes so I took advantage of this with the nice bubbles provided. The bed was huge and very comfortable with a variety of pillows that I am sure would meet all preferences. With a decent duvet, thick black out curtains and no noise, I slept really well.
Disliked: I was patiently waiting to be seated for dinner as the waitress was clearly busy. Another person came in after me and ignored me waiting when the waitress came over and this person was seated before me. I was neither acknowledged nor apologised to and I found that rude. The food was nice enough but the wine was very expensive although I would have ordered another glass had I been asked. Unfortunately I was not particularly well attended to so left without desert, that elusive second glass of wine or paying. I assumed it would be added to my room bill but not really knowing as I had no service offered after my main was served. As a result, I did not stay for breakfast which was a shame. The less public areas are a little run down and I was worried on the walk to my room what I might find but the room itself was ok. It was a little tired with some repairs needed such as grout replacement and curtain hooks but it was reasonably priced so this was not too worrying and the room was clean. There was no wardrobe or drawers or place to hang my work clothes which was inconvenient although an iron and board was provided but bizarrely just propped up in a corner of the room so it felt a little thrown together. I was on the ground floor, my windows opening to a deserted little alley running alongside other rooms. This left me feeling vulnerable and I had to keep the windows closed as a result, so perhaps a fan could be provided to help with temperature regulation in the absence of a safe window opening. With the view of a wall, it was ok for one night but not ideal and if I had stayed beyond one night, for security reasons, I would have probably asked to be moved. Also, I would have liked a SMART TV as I don't know anyone who does not stream these days. I was stuck with mainstream TV which does does not cut it and cheapens the experience really when this is pretty much standard in most other places I stay, working away most of every week.
