The Spotlight on Hilton Garden Inn Sunderland

Stylish Comfort Next to the Stadium of Light

Modern and welcoming, the Hilton Garden Inn Sunderland blends convenience with comfort right next to the iconic Stadium of Light. Just a 15-minute walk from Sunderland city center and a short drive to the beaches at Roker and Seaburn, this hotel is a smart choice for travelers looking to be close to the action without sacrificing a good night’s sleep. With free on-site parking, a sleek grill restaurant, and a 24-hour fitness center, this hotel has everything you need for a smooth and satisfying stay.

Why Concert-goers love it

You honestly can’t get much closer to the Stadium of Light—it’s right next door. That means no worrying about taxis or traffic after the show. The hotel is surprisingly quiet given its location, offering a peaceful spot to unwind. With flexible check-in from 3:00 PM and a generous 12:00 PM checkout, you won’t feel rushed the next morning. It’s also well-connected by road and public transport, so getting back late won’t be a hassle.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends catching a show or game together
- Solo travelers ticking off a bucket-list gig
- Couples making a weekend of it with beach strolls and live music
- Fans wanting a quieter post-concert recovery space
- Budget-conscious music lovers looking for value with perks

Food and Drink Options

The on-site Karbon Grill restaurant serves up hearty American fare like steaks, burgers, and seafood, perfect for a post-concert bite. There’s also a handy shop with microwaveable meals and snacks for late-night cravings. Breakfast is available in the restaurant and is ideal for those recovering from a big night. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the grill stays open for dinner and the in-room facilities (microwave and mini-fridge) come in handy.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself doesn’t host live music, you’re steps from major concert events and a short walk or drive from bars and lounges in Sunderland’s city center. For a quieter drink, the hotel bar offers a relaxed vibe with a good selection of drinks—great for winding down after the encore.

What People Say

Guests praise the hotel’s location next to the stadium, calling it unbeatable for event nights. Reviews often mention the friendly staff, clean and modern rooms, and excellent value. The food gets high marks, especially the steaks at Karbon Grill, and the free parking is a welcome bonus.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that the on-site restaurant can get busy on game or concert nights, so booking ahead is a good idea. Others wished for more nightlife directly at the hotel, but with the city center nearby, it’s not a dealbreaker.

The Bottom Line

For concert-goers heading to the Stadium of Light, the Hilton Garden Inn Sunderland offers unbeatable proximity, comfort, and convenience—all without breaking the bank.

Falls short

Liked: The hotel is next to the stadium. So easy to get to and from the stadium.
Disliked: 1) one very slow machine for all coffee / tea for the entire hotel at breakfast - queues of 20 minutes to get a cup of coffee at breakfast - frankly unacceptable 2) being near the stadium meant after the match the restaurant was closed, the bar was packed with no seats and massive queues, no food could be delivered because of road closures. Not the quiet comfortable haven you’d expect. (Also meant car park closed) 3) newish hotel already showing lack of care - mismatched light bulb colours in lamps, representing poor caretaking, slow check in, 4) crazy expensive prices - not justified by the experience of staying there.

Great location but everything else...

Liked: Location was great
Disliked: Shower pressure was terrible. No bottled water in room. It was a match day so the price was inflated but for £500plus a night I didn’t expect the room to have a super thin duvet so we were cold and they ran out of tonic water in the bar.

Stingy for the price

Liked: The location was great although we weren't informed we could not park on site on a match day, so one of the main benefits was lost.
Disliked: It was stingy for the price. 1 loo roll, 2 tea bags in the room. No biscuits. One slow coffee machine at breakfast. I understand paying a premium on match day but a few small details could have made this feel less like we were being taken advantage of. Given this, and being unable to park (had to park at Tesco... only 5 min walk but would have been nice to know), I felt stung. I'll not willingly use hilton garden inn again due to that.
