Why Concert-goers love it

Location is everything, and this hostel delivers—steps from downtown venues and just a quick stroll or ride share from the San Diego Convention Center. Late-night returns are easy thanks to the 24-hour reception and no curfew, so whether the encore runs long or the after-party calls, you're covered. • Budget-conscious music lovers who’d rather spend on tickets than beds

Food and Drink Options

While there's no on-site restaurant, guests love the fully-equipped, 24/7 communal kitchen—perfect for late-night snacks or early morning breakfasts after a long night out. Plus, the Gaslamp Quarter is packed with walkable dining spots ranging from taco joints to upscale bites. Free coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are always available to keep you fueled.

Nightlife Options

You're in the thick of it here—surrounded by bars, live music venues, and late-night lounges. Whether you're catching a show or continuing the night after, options are plentiful. While there’s no bar on-site, the hostel’s social lounge often feels like one—minus the tab.

What People Say

Guests rave about the friendly staff, clean facilities, and unbeatable location. The social atmosphere makes it easy to connect with other travelers, and the hostel’s commitment to sustainability and community gets major kudos. Reviewers especially appreciate the free luggage storage and high-speed WiFi in the common areas.

Areas for Improvement

This is a hostel, so expect shared spaces and a casual vibe. Some guests mention that dorm rooms can get warm without A/C (though private rooms do offer it), and light sleepers might want to pack earplugs if staying near the street.

The Bottom Line

For music fans who want a budget-friendly, central, and social place to crash after the show, HI San Diego Downtown Hostel hits all the right notes.

Great value for the price

Liked: Overall a good experience. The lounge and kitchen area was great. Nice TV and it had a charging station which is nice. Beds were not super comfortable and it was very hard to get up to the top bunk. I'm 62 and overweight so it was very risky. I fell off the ladder and injured my foot.
Disliked: I mentioned them above.

Great!

Liked: No breakfast included, that was a bummer. But we had coffee and tea all day long. Also great and enough storage for our food. Even though I was in a 6 female bed room, we had bed curtains that gave us privacy
Disliked: Too loud at nights because out street noise. You need to use earplugs. I stayed in an 6 bed female room, one of them was sick, kept coughing all night long. You need to bring your lock to lock your locker

The hostel experience you're looking...

Liked: I loved the open space on the second floor with the game room and kitchen. I also loved the shower timer that helped keep showers short.
Disliked: Maybe shower mats could be nice? I used the towels provided but just a suggestion. There was also no dish soap for any of the kitchen sinks?
