Lovely surroundings but disappointing stay.

Liked: Beautiful building set in lovely surroundings.
Disliked: I was born in Hardwick Hall and went back to celebrate my 70th birthday for 2 nights (Monday and Tuesday)to see what it was like. Unfortunately during our stay the building and grounds were slowly being taken over by workmen and equipment preparing for a music festival the next weekend. The staff seemed to become less and less interested in the guests during our stay. Our taxi, ordered to take us out for the Tuesday evening couldn’t get near the car park and after a confusing 20 minutes our taxi managed to get to a rear car park to collect us. One member of staff told us on our second evening there that the hotel was “officially” closed to guests even though we were booked in until the next morning. If I’d known the situation I would have booked for another time instead. Very disappointing.
