The Spotlight on Hanalei Colony Resort

Peaceful Oceanfront Escape with Island Vibes Near Kauai's Music Scene

Hanalei Colony Resort is a tranquil, beachfront hideaway located on Kauai’s lush North Shore. With its tropical-inspired suites, ocean views, and relaxed island ambiance, it's a serene base for concert-goers who want to pair live music with a rejuvenating getaway. The suites come with fully equipped kitchens, private balconies, and no TVs or phones—perfect for a digital detox before or after the show.

Located just minutes from Hanalei town and close to iconic beaches like Tunnels and Ke'e, this resort blends nature, comfort, and convenience in one unforgettable stay.

Why Concert-goers love it

This resort is ideal for those attending shows in Hanalei town or nearby Princeville. The complimentary shuttle service makes getting to and from venues easy and safe—even in the evenings (for a small fee). The peaceful setting and absence of TVs means quiet nights post-show are guaranteed. Plus, the early check-in at 3 PM gives travelers time to unwind before heading out.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a laid-back beach spot with room to hang
  • Solo travelers craving a mindful, music-filled getaway
  • Couples seeking a romantic concert weekend with ocean views
  • Fans wanting a quieter post-concert recovery space—this place is built for peace
  • Budget-conscious music fans who want to cook their own meals and save on dining

Food and Drink Options

The on-site Opakapaka Grill and Bar serves up fresh island cuisine with stunning ocean views—ideal for pre-show dinners or post-gig nightcaps. While there's no 24/7 room service, each suite features a full kitchen and dining area, making it easy to plan your own late-night bites. There’s also a range of eateries in nearby Hanalei town, easily accessible via resort shuttle.

Nightlife Options

While the resort itself is more serene than party-centric, Hanalei town offers a handful of chill bars and casual live music spots. The shuttle service makes it easy to explore without needing to drive. Back at the resort, unwind with a drink at the beachfront bar as waves crash in the background.

What People Say

Guests rave about the beautiful ocean views, peaceful atmosphere, and friendly staff. The shuttle service is a favorite for those attending events, and many appreciate the lack of screens for a more authentic Kauai experience. Reviewers also love the proximity to snorkeling beaches and hiking trails.

Areas for Improvement

If you're looking for nightlife or in-room entertainment, the lack of TVs and on-site clubs might feel limiting. The check-out time is a bit early (10 AM), so plan accordingly if you’re out late. Cell service can be spotty in this remote area, but that’s part of the charm for many.

The Bottom Line

Hanalei Colony Resort is perfect for concert-goers who want to trade the post-show hustle for ocean breezes, starry skies, and a true taste of island tranquility.

Not bad compared to the...

Liked: I like nature and the room design.
Disliked: Not specifically when people talk about our room in the morning. And we saw a cockroach in the room.

The perfect place to stay...

Liked: The location and the room was perfect for us. The bed was super comfortable and we commented on the weight of the duvet but during the night we were sure glad to have it. The kitchen was well equipped with new pots and pans, a coffee maker and all the plates, cups and cutlery you could possibly need. We enjoyed Tunnels Beach and it was so handy using the shuttle bus. The beach chairs and snorkels were an added bonus.
Disliked: Having to leave.

Beautiful location, but the rooms...

Liked: The location of the hotel is beautiful in the wonderful north of Kauai, with easy access to Haena state park and the cute city of Hanalei with several restaurants. The room was spacious.
Disliked: We booked the premium ocean front suite which is said on the website to have two bedrooms. This is not true, it is designed as one big room (kitchen, living area, king bed and a small couch as a second bed. The small couch will fit a small person and shouldn’t be marketed as a bed for an adult, perhaps a child. You can «close» the rooms with a partition, but these are fully open all the way around the roof, so it gives no feeling of two rooms. We were only two people, so it wasn’t a big issue, but my brother rented this room also with his wife, baby and our mother, and it was of course a problem. Picture underneath. It was also not cleaned to my liking, there was a lot hair not cleaned from the shower drain.

A very quiet, comfortable, and...

Liked: Almost everything! Remoteness/privacy. Size of room. Ocean views. Easy parking. Included beach chairs & sun shades/beach umbrellas. Pool towels already in room. Staff friendly & helpful. Full size fridge and well stocked kitchen cookware & utensils for 4 people, excellent ventilation in the sleeping and living/dining areas, nice bed linens.
Disliked: Only a couple of items:1. At check in we were told that our room had been upgraded from “ocean view” to “ocean front”. Nice!… until we got to the room and realized that at most, calling our room “ocean front” was a significant exaggeration. Yes, it had lovely ocean views from 2 different angles, but there were actually two 2-story buildings in front of us, which were truly the “ocean front” rooms (4 rooms in each building), that is, nothing between them and the sand/water. Come on guys, let’s be real and just call it what it is: “ocean view”, just like many of the other rooms at HCR. To be told that we had an ocean front room during check-in and then to see what the situation was actually like, was truly disappointing, and honestly, it made us feel as though we had been duped. It would’ve started things off on a much better footing had nothing been said about an “upgrade”, as we were already expecting a room with nice ocean views, as had been described in the online listing. Authenticity goes a long way, especially with first encounters. 2. There were other things as well, all quite nit picky, but nevertheless still things we didn’t like: broken toilet seat in the half bath, no exhaust fan in the full bath, (hurricane style windows which could be cranked open , yes, but well below eye level for many people on the outside walkway, thus we didn’t feel comfortable leaving them even partially open while showering, thus a very humid/wet bathroom after showers), rust covering the top of the refrigerator and multiple ceiling fans (which were otherwise quite nice with remotes and several settings), lack of a dishwasher, and super thin, seemingly less than single ply, paper towels & TP.

Exceptional boutique experience. A must-stay!

Liked: Sunrise from the lanai. Endless walks on the sand to tunnels beach. Spacious, well appointed condo. A 10 out of 10 if you aren’t a mega-resort type:) We are currently on the south shore for four nights and I’m honestly considering bailing on our fancy (expensive) non-refundable hotel to return to the Colony for the remainder of our trip.
Disliked: I loved everything.
