The Spotlight on Hallgarth Manor House

Historic Country Escape Just Outside the City Buzz

Hallgarth Manor House blends classic English charm with modern comforts in a peaceful countryside setting just 3 miles from Durham’s vibrant city centre. Set in beautifully landscaped gardens, this 16th-century former estate has been thoughtfully refurbished, offering a relaxed atmosphere with traditional touches like original wood beams and cozy interiors. With free Wi-Fi throughout the property and easy access to local transport, it’s an ideal base for music lovers heading into Durham for a show.

Why Concert-goers love it

You’re just a short drive or taxi ride from Durham’s key concert venues, making it easy to enjoy a night out and return to a peaceful retreat. The quiet countryside location means you can wind down after the show, and with a 3:00 PM check-in and 11:00 AM check-out, there’s enough flexibility to rest up before or after your event. Staff can also help you arrange golf at a nearby course if you’re looking to turn your concert trip into a weekend getaway.

Who this Hotel is great for

Groups of friends looking for a unique stay with character
Solo travelers chasing memorable gigs with a quiet place to crash
Couples turning concert night into a countryside mini-break
Fans who prefer to sleep away from the noise of the city
Budget-conscious music lovers who appreciate value and charm

Food and Drink Options

While there’s no 24/7 room service, the on-site restaurant serves a hearty menu and local specialties. It’s a great place for a pre-show dinner or a relaxed breakfast after a late night. There are also charming pubs and eateries within a short drive, offering everything from craft brews to classic pub fare.

Nightlife Options

The hotel itself is more about winding down than partying up, but Durham’s lively pubs and bars are just a quick ride away. Whether you’re heading to a live gig or just grabbing a late drink, you won’t be far from the action—and can return to peace and quiet when you're ready to call it a night.

What People Say

Guests love the beautiful gardens, historic charm, and friendly staff. Many highlight the comfortable rooms and appreciate the blend of old-world atmosphere with modern amenities like free Wi-Fi. The location is consistently praised for being close enough to Durham without the city noise.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests mention that the property’s period charm means a few rooms are a little quirky in layout, and the rural location means you’ll likely need a car or taxi to get to venues or late-night spots. But for most, that’s part of the charm.

The Bottom Line

A peaceful, character-filled stay just outside Durham—perfect for concert-goers who want comfort, convenience, and countryside calm after the encore.

We were impressed with the...

Liked: The location and the Manor House itself was good. The room was comfortable and a good size with an excellent shower.
Disliked: The ‘restaurant’ hardly passes as a restaurant. It was basic in appearance and the tables were shabby with no coverings. We booked into the restaurant for the two nights we were there but after the first night wasted no time in cancelling the second. The food was not the standard you would expect from a property of that kind of accommodation. When it came to breakfast the choice was very limited and the ingredients were very basic. Overall, a very poor dining experience. The bar choice was very limited and after one glass of a standard white wine we were told that they didn’t have any more..

Last minute break near Durham

Liked: It's a lovely building and a good location. The staff were both friendly and helpful. The furniture was of high quality in the room and the shower was good.Food in the restaurant was excellent
Disliked: The attic room was small and lacking a bedside shelf on one side. No where to put my glasses or a drink.Fan in the bedroom would have been a nice touch but to be fair we could have asked for one!

Exceptional

Liked: The room was very clean, the location fantastic, the staff especially in the bar were brilliant, the evening meal was perfection, only thing to let it down was breakfast, I ordered eggs benedict and the bacon was overcooked and there was hardly any hollandaise sauce.
Disliked: There was nothing not to like, everything was absolutely fantastic

Great value for money!

Liked: I arrived quite late but was able to check in with no issues at all. Being late I did not require dinner but had a couple of drinks in the very clean bar. Breakfast was excellent, I had the Full English. The staff were extremely friendly throughout my stay and I would highly recommend this hotel.
