The Spotlight on Hale Hualalai

Tranquil Island Retreat Just Minutes from Kona’s Music Scene

Hale Hualalai is a charming, laid-back bed and breakfast perched above Kailua-Kona with sweeping ocean views and a peaceful, local vibe. Nestled just off the Mamalahoa Highway, this 3-star stay offers a more personal and relaxing Hawaiian experience, while still keeping you close to the action. With private balconies, free WiFi, and free parking, it’s a favorite for concert-goers looking to unwind in comfort.

Why Concert-goers love it

Hale Hualalai is about a 15-minute drive from downtown Kailua-Kona, where many local music venues, beach bars, and festivals take place. It’s far enough from the nightlife to offer a quiet night's sleep, yet close enough that you won’t miss a beat. The private entrances make late-night returns easy, and with free parking, you won’t stress about transportation.

Who this Hotel is great for

Groups of friends seeking a cozy base with room to relax
Solo travelers catching a dream concert and craving a peaceful retreat
Couples pairing a show with a romantic island escape
Fans who want to recharge in nature after a big night
Budget-conscious music lovers looking for value near the action

Food and Drink Options

While Hale Hualalai doesn’t have an on-site restaurant or bar, it’s a short drive to local eateries and cafes known for late-night bites and breakfast with a view. You’ll find plenty of options in nearby Holualoa or Kailua-Kona for a post-show meal or morning coffee.

Nightlife Options

Though the property itself is a peaceful retreat, you’re just a short drive from Kona’s vibrant nightlife. Think beachside bars with live Hawaiian music, craft cocktail lounges, and sunset venues with acoustic sets. It’s easy to enjoy the scene, then retreat back to quiet comfort.

What People Say

Guests love the gorgeous ocean views, friendly hosts, and the chance to experience a more authentic side of the Big Island. The B&B earns praise for its clean rooms, comfortable beds, and peaceful setting, especially after a night out.

Areas for Improvement

This isn’t a full-service hotel, so don’t expect on-site bars or 24-hour front desk service. Some guests mention the 10:00 AM checkout feels early after a late night, and it's best to have a rental car to get around easily.

The Bottom Line

For concert-goers who want to balance music and nightlife with a serene, local-style stay, Hale Hualalai delivers the perfect island escape.

Restful comfortable stay, amazing breakfast!

Liked: The breakfast is amazing! Beautiful location in the hills of Kona.
Disliked: This wasn't a dislike but people should be aware of the steep driveway and rent a car appropriate for the hills!

A tranquil experience.

Liked: Lots of animals. Good ecosystem and rich vegetation. Geckos are cute; cats, chickens, cows. One specific chicken would come up to the property and lay eggs on a particular spot. Eggs look healthy and huge :D Lots of fruit trees. Owners are good people with great hospitality and nice communications. Rooms are clean, spacious, with a nice patio. beds are sooo comfortable. (The combination of sheets, comforters and mattress is something my friend and I really liked.) Weather is pleasant, view is amazing. fruits and breakfast are delicious.
Disliked: None.

Host Ricky was very personable...

Liked: Breakfasts were fantastic. We had delicious omelets with fruit the first morning and delectable guava french toast with guava syrup and coconut topping the second morning. Ricky has been a chef and alternates sweet and savory breakfasts. We enjoyed eating on the lanai and having wonderful long conversations with Ricky on many Hawaiian topics. Our room was spacious and had its own balcony. Out of 4 places we stayed at during our visit to the big island, this was our favorite.
Disliked: The approach to the location is steep and parking tight, but it was manageable. This would not keep us from staying here again when we return to the big island.

Exceptional

Liked: They take a personal approach to running a business instead of just making money. Handmade breakfasts using foods sources from their farm were a highlight. Both Ricky and his wife spent time just talking with us about their business, the farm, the history of the B&B. A wonderful experience! 10/10 recommended. It isn't a high rise, center of the action, fancy place but that made it exactly what we wanted.
Disliked: Wish we could have stayed longer!

Very Good - 4.0 out of 5

Very good

Liked: The breakfasts were fabulous. The host is an excellent cook and a lot of the food was ‘farm to table.’ The owners were friendly. Other writers have mentioned a parking difficulty, but to us it was completely fine. Our room had a lovely balcony overlooking the farm, the hills, and the ocean in the distance.
Disliked: Our plan was to stay out of Kona town to avoid the noises of the city. Unfortunately, the hosts played a radio, 24/7, onto the public patio which we could hear in our room.
