The Spotlight on Haigs Hotel

Relaxed Village Comfort Just Minutes from the NEC

Haigs Hotel is a welcoming, family-run spot located in the quiet village of Balsall Common, perfectly positioned between Coventry and Solihull. With its friendly atmosphere, free parking, and easy access to major roads and transport links, this hotel is a great choice for music fans heading to shows around Birmingham or the NEC. Rooms are light and simple, with thoughtful touches like free mineral water and biscuits on arrival.

Why Concert-goers love it

Just under 7 miles from Birmingham International Airport and the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Haigs Hotel makes it easy to get to and from major gigs without hassle. Its location off the A452 offers quick access to the M6, M42, and M40—ideal if you're road-tripping to a show. Despite the convenient location, the hotel sits in a peaceful village setting, offering a quieter environment for winding down post-concert. Check-in starts at 14:30, giving you time to settle in before heading out, and the on-site bar is perfect for a pre-show drink.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for affordable rooms with free parking
  • Solo travelers wanting easy access to concerts without city-center chaos
  • Couples making a weekend escape out of a gig night
  • Fans who appreciate a quiet night's sleep after a loud show
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who still want comfort and convenience

Food and Drink Options

Haigs Hotel has its own restaurant, McKees Brasserie, serving modern British dishes with a menu that changes monthly—perfect for grabbing dinner before heading out. A traditional full English breakfast is available daily, which hits the spot after a late night out. The hotel also features a bar for casual drinks, though 24/7 room service isn’t offered, so plan snacks accordingly.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself is more of a calm retreat, nearby Solihull and Coventry offer a range of nightlife options, from pubs to lounges. For those attending events at the NEC, you're a short drive or taxi ride from late-night entertainment, including bars and live music venues.

What People Say

Guests consistently praise the friendly staff and great value for money. The peaceful location is a standout for those needing rest after a concert, and the restaurant receives high marks for quality and variety. Travelers also appreciate the ample free parking and proximity to the NEC.

Areas for Improvement

The decor is a little dated in places, and some guests mention the bathrooms could use a refresh. Also, with check-out at 10:30, there's not a lot of time to sleep in after a late gig—coffee helps!

The Bottom Line

If you're catching a concert at the NEC or in Birmingham and want a quiet, affordable place to stay with good food and easy access, Haigs Hotel is a solid pick.

A little tired but clean...

Liked: We had a warm welcome on arrival. We had a twin room (no 15), which was a little dated but clean and comfortable. The beds on first inspection didn't promise a good nights sleep, but we both slept well The shower was warm, however, couldn't work out how to get the main shower head to work, so I had to use the smaller head! A non-slip bath mat could have been provided. The hotel itself was a little tired and dated. We didn't eat at the hotel, so I can't comment, but the restaurant was booked out for the evening with live music, so it must be popular. Would we stay again ... im not sure ... maybe!

Great value for money

Liked: A great location, rooms were very clean and comfortable. The hotel was good value for money and the provision of hot drinks, biscuits and bottled water was appreciated
Disliked: Nothing but a hook on the bathroom door would have been useful.

Happy to stay again.

Liked: We have stayed here for many years but usually in a double room. This time we asked for a twin, which was not quite up to the same standard - see below. As usual the items provided in the room are excellent, including the big bath towels, biscuits and water. The heating is excellent too.
Disliked: As mentioned above, our twin room was not quite perfect as there were no bedside tables or lamps. The settee was in their palce. The shower function was fine but the cubicle is a bit tired.
