Good

Liked: Lovely breakfast but would like beans with it
Disliked: Bath didn't hold water as there was no rubber on plug.Mentioned it but had no mention of compensation for our inconvenience is this supposedly 5 star hotel. Obviously having a working bath is not a necessity.

Practically Perfect in Every Way...

Liked: Everything. Kind attentive staff, a beautiful room that I only booked on the day, incredibly historic building and gardens, practically in the grounds of York Minster, private parking making it easy to explore York on foot, good Yorkshire breakfast, lovely bar area in the Long Room, peaceful and just what I needed as a short stopover on my drive up to Scotland.
Disliked: Nothing. Just a couple of tips for other travellers : (1) there isn't a lift because this is a listed building and not allowed to convert it so if you are visiting with reduced mobility be aware you will have to walk up a couple of flights of stairs. Staff will help you with your luggage but not recommended if you are in a wheelchair or use mobility aids. (2) Their restaurant is closed on Tuesdays, not a problem because there are lots of interesting independent restaurants in York. I can recommend the York Minster Refectory only a few minutes walk away, excellent food.
