The Spotlight on Graduate by Hilton Evanston

Historic Charm Meets Concert Convenience

Modern comfort blends with vintage character at the Graduate by Hilton Evanston, a Williamsburg-style hotel originally built in 1927. Located just two blocks from Northwestern University in the heart of Evanston, this hotel offers a cozy, collegiate vibe with updated amenities and a nod to classic Americana style. With downtown Chicago only 14.6 miles away, you're close enough to the action—without sacrificing peace and quiet.

Each guest room features free Wi-Fi, cable TV, coffee facilities, and a comfortable seating area, all in a traditionally styled setting. Whether you're crashing after a concert or planning a weekend escape, you'll find a warm welcome here.

Why Concert-goers love it

Concert fans appreciate the easy access to downtown Chicago venues while enjoying a quieter, more relaxed base in Evanston. The hotel’s location makes it a great choice for those attending shows at theaters and clubs across the North Side or downtown. After a late night out, you'll be happy to return to a peaceful room and a flexible 4:00 PM check-in time that makes arrival stress-free.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a stylish yet laid-back place to stay
  • Solo travelers seeing their favorite band or artist live
  • Couples planning a romantic concert getaway
  • Fans wanting a quieter post-show recovery zone
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who want comfort without downtown prices

Food and Drink Options

The on-site restaurant, The Homestead Room, serves contemporary American cuisine and offers a full wine list—perfect for a pre-show dinner or relaxed night in. While there’s no 24/7 room service, local eateries are within easy walking distance, and you’ll find late-night bites nearby. Coffee lovers will enjoy the in-room coffee facilities for those groggy mornings after a late show.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel doesn’t host live music, you’re a short ride from Chicago’s vibrant nightlife—including lounges, clubs, and iconic music venues. Back in Evanston, you’ll find a few low-key bars and craft cocktail spots to wind down the evening, or sip something special at the hotel’s cozy bar.

What People Say

Guests consistently highlight the hotel’s charming vintage style, spotless rooms, and friendly service. Many reviewers love the walkable location and easy access to public transportation heading into Chicago. Others mention the peaceful atmosphere as a major plus after a loud and energetic concert night.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests mention that the hotel’s historic character comes with thinner walls and older plumbing in places. The lack of valet or on-site parking can be a minor inconvenience, especially during busy weekends. But overall, these are small trade-offs for the location and charm.

The Bottom Line

For concert-goers who want a stylish, quiet place to recharge that's close to Chicago’s music scene, Graduate by Hilton Evanston hits all the right notes.

It was fine

Liked: Clean
Disliked: No free breakfast, for the price that’s charged it could provide breakfast, so many other hotels provide breakfast at half the price. Also hated that you have to move your car every two hours between 9am and 9pm.

This is a "Good" hotel,...

Liked: The location is excellent insofar as it is in a peaceful neighborhood, close to many restaurants, Northwestern University, and public transportation. The decorating is historic/old style and to us at least, appealing. For the most part the staff was friendly (the maintenance person that assisted us was excellent!); the breakfast in the restaurant was of good quality, but the selections are limited and the prices are (not surprisingly given that it is in a hotel) on the expensive side. Overall, the current rating of 8.5 seems about right IMO.
Disliked: While our experiences at The Graduate have been generally positive- and we would stay here again, so none of them were "deal breakers"-there were a few missteps worth noting. For example: 1. When we checked in we asked if they had umbrellas available and were told somewhat brusquely that there were not "because guests kept stealing them." While I appreciate that would be a problem, the comment seemed almost accusatory. (I swear, we never borrowed an umbrella, much less stole one! :) Perhaps the hotel could check out umbrellas and charge the guest/deduct from the security deposit that is required if not returned?; 2. On two different occasions in two different seasons the heat in our rooms in different sections of the hotel did not work adequately. When we reported it to the front desk we felt that each time we were given the run around to some extent. On both occasions we were supplied with space heaters to partially remedy the problem. Given the price and level of this hotel- despite the fact that it is a stately, older building- it seems that they should remedy the underlying issues rather than apply a band aid of sorts; and 3. While checking out I noticed that there was an incorrect charge for valet parking on our bill and brought this to the attention of the receptionist. (I was especially surprised to see the charge given the fact that the receptionist upon checking in specifically asked if we had left a car with the valet and we responded in the negative, but the charge was for that very same day!) I understand that mistakes happen, but I was a little put off by the fact that rather than the receptionist taking my word for it, she said she had to check with the valet. Again, this seemed accusatory. Moreover, the charge remained on my credit card for several days and I was required to write several emails- finally to the management- before receiving an apology and explanation that an incorrect entry resulted in the hotel's error.

Poor

Liked: Nice atmosphere
Disliked: Facilities in general were quite poor and old. Conditioning wasn't operating properly, beds were old and with pits in the middle. No breakfast, no tea in the room, was expecting more for that price.

Hidden gem

Liked: I stayed in this hotel 6 years ago and it was charming but needed a bit of TLC. It’s had that TLC and it’s still charming but now it’s more comfortable and stylish. I love the college theme and details. The staff were all welcoming, helpful, polite and clearly enjoy working there! Our lake view room was spacious with a great bathroom.
Disliked: Nothing except that we couldn’t stay longer!!
